Split Emotion gets a 94, Movement a 92, Gloomy Night an 85.
Guys. Guys.
If you're gonna give Split Emotion a 94, what does Lemon Drops get? New Animal? Century Creepers? Third Eye?...etc etc...Like a Lovesong? I hope your scale goes far beyond 100.
Again, not trying to be a downer. Let's just try to put these tracks into context though.
Hold up, hold, wait, waaaait, stopppppppp *runs to the west coast*. I was... playing dot hack for... *wheeze* too many hours straight last night and *cough* never came back downstairs after I posted that.
I can see you aren't trying to be a downer, but hear me out here.
Those numbers are only relative to each other. Split Emotion and Movement were closest to meeting my ideal expectations for "new pillows hotness", or at least closer than Gloomy Night was. "new pillows hotness" /=/ overall discography strength! Two totally different things! Over time, they will rank and file with our perceptions of what the best songs are and where all the pieces fall. (and of course there will be plenty of room for discussion on that too) I don't think this is an unnatural or non-typical way of percieving the value of something new. And I can tell you right now, it won't be long until these songs reach "other pillows songs to swap in on occasion" status.
To use the songs you listed, their "new pillows hotness", or "new product appeal" ratings, for me, varied as such:
Lemon Drops @ release = 93
Lemon Drops @ currently = ehhhh, it's ok I guess, low 80's?
New Animal @ release = 96 Alright this song is awesome!
New Animal @ current = Still pretty good, one of their best new songs, high 80's low 90's?
Century Creepers @ release = high 80's kinda sounds like march of the god pt2, it's good
Century Creepers @ current = a little higher
Third Eye @ release = Hell yeahssssssss 96
now = hell yeahhssssss 94
Like a Lovesong @ release (first listen) = 82 well this is a cute song
Like a lovesong @ now = 95 hot damn that's a good feel good anthem, great live
^ All of that varies from person to person
What we consider their staple songs and most noteworthy songs, after all this time, that stuff is still king. It is still 95 -100 range, and it isn't going anywhere. I would be willing to bet the initial feelings of some of these songs could have possibly been LOWER than what is currently "common knowledge". Over time, they gained in appeal. Like how I felt with Like a Lovesong.
In short, the cream rises over time despite current feelings/tastes of new material, despite consideration for different time periods, despite how we felt when we first heard what we considered "the best", and probably any other factor. I think in a way we all arrive at mostly the same conclusions. We all fudge the numbers in some way or another (especially initial thoughts), it's not really a big deal.
Ok, now I have Pneumonia.
