In simple, this single is fucking amazing! Favorite single thus far :)

Also, Gloomy Night's intro and outro sound very similar to The Church's Under the milky way solo. :groovin: Favorite surprise of the entire single.

Gloomy night's intro is Moon Marguerite, I was disappointed the chorus doesn't hold up the same way
:(

That said, huge step up from Rodeo Star Mate's single, excited for the album~

Split Emotion gets a 94, Movement a 92, Gloomy Night an 85.
Guys. Guys.

If you're gonna give Split Emotion a 94, what does Lemon Drops get? New Animal? Century Creepers? Third Eye?...etc etc...Like a Lovesong? I hope your scale goes far beyond 100.

Again, not trying to be a downer. Let's just try to put these tracks into context though.
Hold up, hold, wait, waaaait, stopppppppp *runs to the west coast*. I was... playing dot hack for... *wheeze* too many hours straight last night and *cough* never came back downstairs after I posted that.

I can see you aren't trying to be a downer, but hear me out here.

Those numbers are only relative to each other. Split Emotion and Movement were closest to meeting my ideal expectations for "new pillows hotness", or at least closer than Gloomy Night was. "new pillows hotness" /=/ overall discography strength! Two totally different things! Over time, they will rank and file with our perceptions of what the best songs are and where all the pieces fall. (and of course there will be plenty of room for discussion on that too) I don't think this is an unnatural or non-typical way of percieving the value of something new. And I can tell you right now, it won't be long until these songs reach "other pillows songs to swap in on occasion" status.

To use the songs you listed, their "new pillows hotness", or "new product appeal" ratings, for me, varied as such:

Lemon Drops @ release = 93
Lemon Drops @ currently = ehhhh, it's ok I guess, low 80's?

New Animal @ release = 96 Alright this song is awesome!
New Animal @ current = Still pretty good, one of their best new songs, high 80's low 90's?

Century Creepers @ release = high 80's kinda sounds like march of the god pt2, it's good
Century Creepers @ current = a little higher

Third Eye @ release = Hell yeahssssssss 96
now = hell yeahhssssss 94

Like a Lovesong @ release (first listen) = 82 well this is a cute song
Like a lovesong @ now = 95 hot damn that's a good feel good anthem, great live

^ All of that varies from person to person

What we consider their staple songs and most noteworthy songs, after all this time, that stuff is still king. It is still 95 -100 range, and it isn't going anywhere. I would be willing to bet the initial feelings of some of these songs could have possibly been LOWER than what is currently "common knowledge". Over time, they gained in appeal. Like how I felt with Like a Lovesong.

In short, the cream rises over time despite current feelings/tastes of new material, despite consideration for different time periods, despite how we felt when we first heard what we considered "the best", and probably any other factor. I think in a way we all arrive at mostly the same conclusions. We all fudge the numbers in some way or another (especially initial thoughts), it's not really a big deal.

Ok, now I have Pneumonia. :dead:

Everyone shut the fuck up.

It was an awesome single and way better than most of OOParts

I can tell the new album is gonna be awesome because of this and Rodeo Star Mate.

Also, to GR:

You don't grade in comparison to other works, you grade on a scale of how good it was done and how much you liked it. You'd make a horrible high school teacher.

Can some with knowledge on Japanese tell me what the pink numbers mean that are associated with each single? I think the left column is how it did over time, while the right represents the singles' peak position on the Oricon charts? If that's true... that means all of the golden age singles debuted at #1 on Oricon. But I don't think that's right.

He wins the award for best attempted defense of rabid, squealing fanboyism, yeah. But if you think we should, ya know, not shit our pants over something just because it's new, then his post is long-winded and just plain wrong.

When the Third Eye and Aidonwanadai came out, pillows and GNB fans highly praised the respective singles because they were, and still are, fucking awesome. There's no need to cream our jeans over every single release and ten years later retrospectively decide which songs were actually good.

Further evidence of this is that most of us have given realistic assessments of Movement, as well, the general consensus being that it's "pretty good" and encouraging compared to the last few releases.

The pink on the left is the peak position on the chart, and the right is number of weeks on the chart, I think.

I was drunk, and you just got trollllllllllolololololol'd, Jolmei. ;)

No, but he does make a few good points, though the "quality changing over time" thing is silly. Ultimately, all that really matters though is individual enjoyment, however you define it and rank it.

There is something to be said about how songs can grow on you or fade from favor. However, I also wouldn't rate these songs so high myself (i.e. 90+) unless I truly thought they were on the level to make my top n list. I played the Third Eye on repeat like crazy when it came out, I definitely rated it highly at the time, and I still think it's fantastic.

I happened to listen to Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! and Pied Piper all the way through today and my opinions haven't changed too much. Some songs have grown on me a little more, but not to A status.

@Raid: I'd find it hard to believe that for any subjectively graded work, all teachers would be able to refrain 100% from thinking that a student didn't live up to his/her previous performance on the latest assignment and downgrade a little accordingly.
