Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
The reason it doesn't sound 100% live is because they record all the separate audio feeds through the sound system and then are able to make the parts come out clear, or at least that's how I THINK it works. Not really sure, but it's definitely the live audio, just cleaned up. If you notice, they don't correct mistakes in the guitar playing or anything when it occurs, all they do is just make all the parts come out clearly.

But still, the performance itself is 100% live, right? I mean in all of the following DVD releases, I'm sure they do the same thing (what with the "cleaning up" used in WBHZ), and the performances don't sound "perfect".
There are a lot of vocal qualities in the Liquid Room 1997 performance that are definately unique to that one performance, and therefore I conclude that the Welcome to Bubbletown's Happy Zoo DVD is not dubbed. The real question is, where the hell did rockman get his information? There's no proof, he simply says "Actually, this performance was dubbed." And that's it.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
Of course they didn't use the versions that made the records, if that's what you mean.
You would be surprised how much they dub concert videos. My dad taught me that years ago and it's something I always watch closely for.

Pay close attention to Sawao's mouth. It's clear that what he is singing is not what we are hearing. There are some times when Sawao moves away from the mic and you hear him making noise.
Still not convinced? Listen to the last line of Hybrid Rainbow. You can hear two Sawaos singing. This is especially apparent at the very end.
...It's disappointing, isn't it?

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
You also realize that the video and audio feeds of concerts are recorded separately, and are put together later on, sometimes with video being mixed around to get the "best" feel, which can also account for this. There's more than one possible explanation, and having heard Sawao sing live three times, I can say that I don't doubt this was his live singing.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
It wouldn't make any since to dub the performance though.. that'd be lame. Also, Sawao's voice was sounding awesome back in 1997... Still, I guess we will never know for sure.
It wouldn't make any since to dub the performance though.. that'd be lame.
Of course it would make sense. They want the DVD to be top quality/worth the money, and most people won't know the difference.
You also realize that the video and audio feeds of concerts are recorded separately, and are put together later on, sometimes with video being mixed around to get the "best" feel, which can also account for this.
This is true, and could account for timing issues, but it is obviously dubbed. What can I say, except "Watch the DVD, paying close attention to Sawao's mouth."?
Dubbing is nothing new. Most singers dub their concert videos.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
I'm pissed. If it's not a real live, it's not worth the money.
I'm pissed. If it's not a real live, it's not worth the money.
I assure you sure that with all common sense that this is a Live DVD. Really guys? Processing audio and video files into DVD's are a lot more complicated when configuring with such a hazy sound. Its made more acute so that the DVD QUALITY fits better with what they originally planned the DVD for. Sawao in my opinion has never dubbed his voice live. Ps. That other voice in Hybrid Rainbow is probably Jun's voice, maybe

I just answered this; since they often use different cuts at different times, they're most likely just dubbing the live audio over the selectively used live video, which explains for any differences in his mouth and what you hear. They might do a little cleanup on the sound of the DVD to make the parts come out clearer, but I don't think it's dubbed. Again, I've heard Sawao's voice live three times, and you can hear his untouched live voice on several rock festival videos, he's a good singer.
Also, another thing that goes against your theory, the exhaustion in his voice as the DVD goes on. You can't fake that.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
Well, Mare is making feel more comfortable here. Thanks man, I will seriously have a cataclysm within my pillows soul if that DVD is dubbed. Your argument is convincing though, and yeah, you can definately hear the exhaustion in Sawao voice as the performance goes on. And also, if it was dubbed, they would've taken the time to make his vocals cleaner. I mean, seriously, there are some vocal "mistakes" throughout the entire performance in terms of intonation.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
The DVD is dubbed in the sense that the audio is recorded separately and then dubbed over the video, but it's the actual audio recording from that performance.

As long as it's the same audio from the same actual live, it does not matter. I was concerned with the fact that they may have added in Sawao's vocals from some other source altogether.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
Let's not kid ourselves, Sawao's current live voice is not nearly as clean as his voice some years ago. Seriously.
I mean, the Scarecrow DVD was pretty good, but really now. He's sort of all over the place.
