Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
What the fu- I DIDN'T compare them, you did. You basically said 'well j mascis is hardly 'great', he hasn't won a grammy or sold millions of records'. All I fucking did was quote what J Mascis said in regards to the whole Napster fiasco that Metallica started 7 or 8 years ago, and then stated a reason or two why he isn't as irrelevant as you sounded like you were making him out to be.
1. The fact that you have to obtain illegal software (that's probably even chock full of malware) to rip drm off nearly every song you buy online still makes DRM enough of a nuisance. Not even mentioning that they're usually pretty low quality.
2. Both John Mayer and Mark Hoppus have both sold multi platinum records. They're not just giving sig models away like condom samples on a college campus. They think that making a guitar named after them will make them money, so they do it. I didn't say that the fact they made one for J. Mascis makes him greater or more popular than Metallica.
3. It's a fact that the metal genre is A LOT more popular than the whole alternative rock of the 90s and even into the 00s. So yeah, Metallica is a lot more popular than J. Mascis (I said it. happy?).
But honestly, so fucking what? Only thing that matters here is that sadly Metallica fans (you not included of course, as you have said you don't even like metallica so I have no idea why you're even 'defending' them) are probably in the minority compared to Dinosaur Jr. fans on this forum.
So in conclusion:
FUCK METALLICA.
jesus christ. BREATHING EXERCISES, everyone. INNN. OUT.

Strangely enough I was thinking about ska music earlier today. Not a big fan of it. But might give Nine Miles a try.

I'm beginning to think you might not be able to read. I did compare them. I did not deny comparing them. I explicitly stated that Metallica is great, and J. Mascis is not...at all. Then you rebutted by saying that J. Mascis was great because he has his own signature guitar from Fender. You also implied that Metallica was not great because of the whole DRM issue. Finally, you responded to an argument that I did not make by saying that record sales and popularity are not the sole criteria for greatness. Are you still following?
I said Metallica is great. I said J. Mascis is not great. I did not say J. Mascis is an irrelevant toolbag. Reading comprehension skills are important, now.

This is just false. Maybe they are comparable when you consider metal as a whole genre, but when you consider thrash metal, alternative rock beats the shit out of it in terms of popularity. Who was talking about popularity anyway? We all know Metallica is a lot more popular than J. Mascis, and no one even thought that was up for debate...geez, skool...you make me wonder sometimes...I am sure your handle was intentionally spelled like that, though...I'm sure.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
I'm saying I DIDN'T COMPARE them, so there's no argument about who's greater. No one compared their greatness but you.
Yes, I do think J Mascis is great because people recognize him as a pioneer in the alternative rock scene. I understand everything you said. You don't have to be an immature jackass and insult me to get your point across.
You also implied that Metallica was not great because of the whole DRM issue.
I didn't say they weren't great, I just said I didn't like them. If they weren't immensely popular, they wouldn't have made such a huge impact on the whole DRM issue. Once again, I never said they weren't great, I just a) don't like their music and b) not exactly fond of them because of what happened.
Finally, you responded to an argument that I did not make by saying that record sales and popularity are not the sole criteria for greatness.
But it's pretty much 95% of the reason why they would be considered greater than anything J Mascis has ever done. I'm pretty sure if you compare greatness to an average person between, like, actors for example, the main point would be how many awards each actor has won. Who's ever won more is the greatest. I'm not comparing Metallica and J Mascis. At all.
well I am
good for you.
So I kinda don't even know why you're even posting. Your point is Metallica is great, J Mascis is not. I think otherwise, and then you proceed to list off reasons why I'm wrong about my opinion. Again, I never once said that Metallica isn't great, or implied that Mascis even rivals them in popularity and achievements and what not. I just said that I hate their music.
Back to what artists everyone's listening to. Unless sheer would like to make an argument about my reading level, which I'd be more than happy to participate in.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
Wow, Sheer once again proves himself to be a complete and utter asshole. How surprising. I think he just has an arguing fetish or something. It's just about all he ever does, after all, but it's probably a side effect of having no friends in real life. Metallica might have been more influential, but I think they're just another boring metal band. If I want to listen to metal, I'd prefer something not totally stupid, such as Between The Buried And Me. If you need any proof of Mascis' influence, Kurt Cobain is a good example, plus Dino Jr. was heavily influential on shoegaze and later alternative bands. Besides, a band's popularity has nothing to do with their quality of music, as Skool pointed out. And no Sheer, nobody cares about your word gymnastics and "I wasn't starting this argument, I just said something implicitly dissing Masics blah blah blah" nonsense because nobody cares.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
You clearly failed to read (correctly) the objective analysis of greatness, and that popularity and awards were only a minor portion of that analysis (certainly not 95%), since you keep bringing it up, skool. J. Mascis does not rival Metallica in terms of greatness - end of story. If you weren't arguing against that, then we have a concord, and we can continue to discuss boring things that aren't arguments.
And Thinliine - if you're not arguing or being a complete an utter asshole, odds are that whatever you are doing on an internet forum is boring. You can take that to be my opinion, or recognize it as more bait - or both. Hahahahaha.

Thinline's words were harsh but he's got a point.
On the other hand, imagine if Sheer went around agreeing with everyone instead of arguing. That would just be creepy.

SO DOES ANYONE LIKE THE COLLECTORS.
I had my ipod on random when I was walking home from school once and fell in love. Then picked up a few of their CDs when I went to the Tower Records in Shibuya. They're awesome!
