^Grats on Donovan and Bowie, Width of a Circle and Moonage Daydream are amazing songs.
The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust is win all around. Best Bowie album ever no contest. But Moonage Daydream is not the best song on the album; that award goes to Rock and Roll Suicide. Which if I could sing one song to Sawao, it would be that one. because that's his song. He is too young to choose and too old to lose it.

Also, I've been getting back in touch with Bugy Craxone lately.
Really if I was to go with strongest song on The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust I'd probably go with Suffragette City. I just enjoy The Width Of A Circle and Moonage Daydream in general, the live versions are just outstanding and really drew me into appreciating Mick Ronson as one of the best guitarists of the 70's and one of my inspirations and influences.

Yeah, it took a while to get most of their discography but it was worth it. "Sinking Slowly" is amazing.

Lately i've been hearing lots of bands. My bro came back from college and brought some of his music cd's. I've heard the beach boys pet sounds! Best album from the beach boys. Caroline No. Sleep John B. And my favorite I'm waiting for the day.

Also heard the zombies Oracle in oddysee or something like that. I like that album. And jefferson airplane. Donovan sucks <.< I like mellow yellow but his other songs aren't as good. Also been hearing the supremes where did our love go! :groovin: :groovin: :groovin:
Frank zappa with the mothers of invention!

Also heard other bands but can't think of them at the moment. Hippy music rocks!
Wait WHAT?

Has anyone listened to the new metallica singles? I like both, but "The day that never ends" is growing onto me more and more. The first time i heard this song, I only heard the solo, which to me is kinda crappy, but an ok job from Hammet. I thought the song was gonna suck major balls, but when i heard the whole song. i wasn't so dissapointed.
The intro is really good and so is the beginning of the song, up until the thrashi parts come, then that's when it's kinda Meh.

in the words of the great J Mascis himself, 'anything metallica is against......i'm for.'

J. Mascis and Metallica: one of these can be classified as great. By the way, it's not J. Mascis.

I don't like Metallica, but even I know this much.

Eh, Cyanide is rather bland and uninteresting. The Day That Never Comes is decent but I think it could use a bit more polish, better production values are really the only thing missing from it (in my opinion anyways). I haven't checked out My Apocalypse yet.

EDIT: My Apocalypse is eh as well. Rather boring start, in fact it sounds rather strung out (or more akin to sounding like a tame version of Battery). But then again on a positive note it sounds a whole lot better than a few of the songs that were on St. Anger. Although I'm still not digging any of the lyrics at all for the new songs. They sound forced; like he just scrapped together lyrics from the old days.

In fact they're so great, they're probably one of the main reasons why the overwhelming majority of the music you buy online is DRM protected. Everybody give it up for Metallica. But you're right, he isn't great at all. In fact some shitty no-name guitar company named Fender gave him his own fucking signature guitar for some retarded reason I'm not aware of. Apparently, some of those idiots thinks he's important.

I really don't care how many records they've sold or how popular they are. You know another group who has sold 100 million records? The Backstreet Boys. Too bad no one here gives a shit about them. So that whole 'you're only great according to the amount of records you sell' argument is pretty pointless imo.

Sorry, I accidentally thought that a band's greatness had something to do with the music they made. What was I thinking? Anyway, if you have any experience with a computer at all, and a brain comparable to that of a chimpanzee, then you would know that DRM protection is the equivalent of protecting a house with shrink wrap.

You know who else has a Fender signature guitar? Everyone, including Mark Hoppus and John Mayer. In fact, if a Fender player doesn't have a signature guitar, it's because he doesn't want one. But maybe you're right, and only people with Fender signature guitars are great.

You know what else is pretty pointless? Making up an argument that nobody made and trying to refute it. Straw men don't hit back, but feel free to hit them at your leisure.

===

However, if you want, we can try to be objective about this. If you can think of acceptable criteria which make a musician "great," then we can compare the two. Here, let me start:

Cultural influence: Metallica has won seven Grammy awards, and is a household name for most people. J. Mascis, Dinosaur Jr., and Witch have won no Grammy awards, and the vast majority of people would not be able to identify any of them. However, J. Mascis does have a signature guitar made by Fender...
Musical influence: Metallica was one of the four big pioneers of thrash metal. While Dinosaur Jr. was marginally influential in the 90's alternative rock movement, they are easily outshadowed by more prominent and influential acts. However, I am sure Mascis has influenced everyone who bought his guitar.
Talent: Kirk Hammett is commonly listed amongst the greatest guitarists of all time. J. Mascis...not so much (then again, he does have that Fender guitar). Additionally, Lars Ulrich is a prominent drummer, and Cliff Burton is well-acknowledged as one of the most talented bass guitarists to ever live (if you want to count him).
Creativity: Hey, this one is actually a crap shoot, since both bands were pioneers in their respective genres.
Popularity: I don't even have to go here, do I?
Longevity: Nor here...if you even want to debate these last two, you're just an idiot. I don't think you're an idiot, so we should be fine.

Hmmm...now it's your turn. Think of an aspect of a "great" artist where J. Mascis triumphs over Metallica. (Hint: "I like him better," doesn't count. Neither does, "X, Y, or Z likes him better, too." I mean, seriously, I probably even like him better than Metallica. And no, Mare, "Mascis is way cooler than Metallica," doesn't count.)
