Post Fuzz
I need a fuzz pedal and I've narrowed down my decision to either:
or

So far, I can tell that the only usefull mode on the fz-5 is the fuzz face. And I know the little big muff is highly recommended, but is it really a true fuzz pedal, or is it distortion?

Any suggestions?

Can anybody tell me (in plain English), what fuzz pedals do? I'm a noob, I know.

they are exactly like distortion except not as rough. More creamy and not as sharp and attacking.

Used a lot in classic rock.

Like the intro in instant music (the song).

Fuzz is meant to recreate the old 'screwdrivers through a speaker cone sound'. The thing is. You really can't generalize fuzz. It varies GREATLY. The best thing about fuzz for me (besides the sound) is combining it with an octave up or when it oscilates. Both have pleasing results.

Anyways, both those pedals aren't ideal fuzz's. The Big Muff is suitable, but it really isn't a amazing fuzz. It's more suitable as a distortion. Those are ok budget fuzz's though, as is the Dunlop Fuzz Face.

However, if you want to expand your budget for a great fuzz, go boutique. Or build your own.

I know Zvex makes the Fuzz Factory, but he's kind of a douche.
There is the Devi Ever's numerous fuzz's.
Check out BYOC. (Build your own clone)
Monsterpiece also has nice ones.
Fulltone '69 is nice.
Frantone Peachfuzz is as well.

I know BYOC and Devi Ever make some cheap ones.

If you ust want one of the two you mentioned, I say the Big Muff. But it's not really a fuzz.

Hope I helped. :)

Well, you said yourself that you only liked one mode from it. It's just not an amazing fuzz...

For the same price you can get an amazing one...

Devi Ever pedals are like 95 bucks or something. Take a look at em.

Post Re: Fuzz
which would you recommend?

I want the most simple yet versatile one devi ever manufactures, but keep in mind: I'm not a big fuzz guy who listens to hendrix.

I'd say the 'Year of the Rat'.

Or maybe the '33'.

Wow, that's pretty nice ( i checked the sound samples )

i definitely like the 33 more than the year of the rat. Any chance you'd know its measurements? (for pedalboard purposes)

Yeah, they're real sexy sound wise and look wise. Devi Ever is really nice too, she goes to a forum I go to.

Uhh, they're the size of a MXR pedal, so off the top of my head, I'm going to guestimate 2-3 inches by 4-5 inches.
