Favorite Song from Every Album
Kinda stupid topic, I know, we've got the top ten, the favorite list and everything, but I just want to get everyone to state their favorite songs from every album [they've listened to.] And WHY. Hearing why someone likes a song almost always gets me to relisten to the song, and hopefully in a new light. As a matter of fact, I would have never liked FRONTIERS unless I heard someone say Sawao's opinion on the piece. Hopefully, this can get people who aren't as familiar with their older stuff (I'm lookin' at you guitarman,) to become encouraged and explore their discography, or even others to just appreciate more of their songs. Also: Many of us tend to favor one style of the pillows, and it shows in our top ten lists and stuff, but by doing this, it forces us to look at their whole track record as a band and appreciate what they've done. Oh man, looking at their discography, I'm in trouble Pantomime: Stand Up and Go - Oh man...Sawao just starts singing, and then all of a sudden, he fades out and BLAM! The drums kick in, and the guitars, and it's like magic. It takes me back to the feelings I had as a kid where I could just wake up every day and take on the world. Living Field: Girlfriend - Hands down, this is seriously one of their most amazing songs they've ever produced, and I have to give it the edge over one of my absolute favorite songs (Okujou ni Nobotte/Climbing on the Roof, which has one of the best-fitting solos ever.) because oh god, while the lyrics are beautiful, so is the translation. Girlfriend is purely amazing, and even listening to it right now, I'm lost in it...Seriously, just listen to it again just because...damn. Please Mr. Lostman: Girls Don't Cry - Oh man...I know what you must be thinking--But Please Mr. Lostman has Strange Chameleon, Swanky Street, Ice Pick, PML, and even Stalker on it! I know, I know, but believe it or not, I didn't even have trouble picking Girls Don't Cry over the rest. In my eyes, Girls Don't Cry is almost the epitome of what harmony is. Girls Don't Cry is one of the most well-balanced songs I've ever listened to in. my. entire. life. The acoustic guitar is synced with the drums, with the bass just adding in another layer, completely enriching the song. The lead guitar...it just fits so perfectly... I swear, this song just had to develop on its own because its simple complexity is just a mark of genius, and that genius is Sawao. Little Busters: One Life - They say music is the universal language, and I find it to be true. To be honest, I don't really pay attention to lyrics, but One Life just reached out and grabbed me. This song...for whatever reason just connected with me. As soon as I heard the chorus, where the guitars just do their amazing thing, it was over. I was hooked. It's like..trying to hold in all of that raw emotion, and almost letting loose (all during the solo), but coming back to get a grip on yourself and letting go, but never really forgetting, y'know? Runner's High: Borderline Case - The first time I heard this, I was blown away. It was stuck in my head for DAYS. It was a really tough decision, putting this ahead of both No Self-Control and Beautiful Morning with You, but there are three things that just push this to beat out the others. First, the bassline is AMAZING, this is probably my favorite basswork out of the entire discography, it's just that damned good. Second, the solo. Oh my god, that solo could go on for days, and I would sit there looking stupid with a smile on my face the entire time. And third, I have to say the synthed chorus just blows me away...While No Self-Control has an AMAZING chorus, the reason why I put Borderline in front of it is because of reasons one and two...Man, this song is just brilliant, and I know a lot of you out there don't dig it as much as you could (and should. ) Happy Bivouac: Funny Bunny, but since everyone who loves music loves Funny Bunny, a very close second for me is Kim Deal - "HOLY CRAP! Can you make a riff so godly with a guitar!?" Is one of the first things that should pop into your mind as you listen to this song. The second thing you can do is just sit there, lifeless, absorbed into the song, unable to think let alone try to describe it better than I can. (Hint: I'm practically speechless.) Fool on the Planet: It's a best-of, so it doesn't really count. But One Life is my top choice, with FotP behind it, just because Fool on the Planet is a godly piece of work, it's to me as Strange Chameleon is to Mare. Smile: Monster c.c. - This, in my opinion, is the sleeper hit of Smile. I was very tempted to pick Smile above this, but then I remembered the lyrics to Monster c.c. and I had to pick this song. When I said that I loved Japanese for how poetic it is, I think Monster c.c. is one heckuva elegant example. "Suwaritai ukabitai. Nemuritai yumemitai. Yumemitai yumemitai. Yume mitai na yumemitai." I just don't feel as though it can be song as beautifully in English. At first I didn't like the song because of the "what's my name" part Sawao screams because it seemed really ghetto, but after hearing that the c.c. stood for Cassius Clay, this part of the song blew me away because I read Muhammad Ali's biography, and it tells the story of him trying to let go of his past and forge a path to the future. Muhammud Ali is one of my heroes, not just because of his boxing talent, but because of what he went through to still become a champion. Thank You, My Twilight: Even though I like the single version better, I'm still going to have to say Shiroi Natsu... just because it's such an amazing song. It's incredibly mellow, the guitars are amazing, and the lyrics will just take you through time. Second pick: ROBOTMAN Another Morning Another Pillows: Sonna Fuu ni Sugoshitai - Ahaha, I'm weak, but Sonna Fuu ni is just one of those songs that I can almost never pass up. I mean...I don't even know why I like it... I feel like there are "better" songs on AMAP, like Going Down and Scent of Sweet, but I just can't help but dig this song. Penalty Life: Kizuato Sasayaki- Dare mo Inai PARADISE (The Scar Whispers Nobody is in Paradise) - This song just barely beats out Noboronai Taiyou (The Sun That Will Not Rise) because I always listen to both right after each other, and they were both just one amazing track in my head, but even though I love Noboronai Taiyou, I just like the pace of Scar Whispers a little more...and it doesn't seem as creepy as "I'm living in your dreams" 90's My Life Returns: Konna hi ga Tsutzukeba ii no ni - When I listen to it, I really wish this day WOULD never end. It's awesome, and I love the added touch of the harmonica; it really makes the song. Turn Back: Bokura no HAREE Suisei - Probably my second favorite track of a song by the pillows. It's godly, hell Sawao realized the bass to this song was so badass, he could make another song badass song based -off- of it: Stalker. (Not really, but probably though.) Good Dreams: New Year's Eve - It's like She Is Perfect's cute little sister that you just can't help but fall in love with. It's the "do do dooo doo's" My Foot: Sayounara UNIBAASU - Even though it reminds me of that one song in Little Shop of Horrors a little bit (the "Suddenly, Seymour" part, anyone?) I love this song to pieces. I'm just glad My Foot (fiction version) wasn't on the album, or else I may never have been able to pick between the two. Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!: Century Creepers - Erm...I just did a search on the word proteus and obtained a disturbing result: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proteus_%28film%29 ..and when you look at Mare' translated lyrics... At least we know Sawao loves me. But seriously folks, Century Creepers = effing amazing. It took me about, holy hell, three hours to go through their discography just to decide between the songs I liked a crapload on their albums, and it really made me appreciate all of the work and effort they've put through all of these years. If you've got a lot of free time, and can try limiting your choices as much as possible, go ahead and reply. Even if you haven't listened to every album, just list the top song from the albums you have listened to. It took me so long to type this , I got logged off of IM, and it even tried eating this post.

Re: Favorite Song from Every Album
Wow. Blank must be crying. He put soo much effort into his post and what do ya give him?! lol. EDIT: Disco ninja'd me, atleast he gave some explanations EDIT: Songs for KS, LF, and LB added, as well as an analysis for every song. INSTA-EDIT: Storm's comin' I'll finish later EDIT: the power went out 10 seconds after I submitted, lol. Pantomime - Pantomime. Very charming song. The drums give a nice march pace to the song and there is great interaction between the guitars. The guitar increases in complexity as the song goes on, especially noticed in the two guitar solos 90'S my LIFE - 90's My Life. The sad harmonica and piano intro with conversations and laughter in the background make this song full of win. Then the song bursts into an upbeat mood. Makes me want to walk around town with a bright smile on my face MOON GOLD - Dear, My 'First' Step. It was a hard choice between a few songs here, but the chorus in this song pushed it ahead of the rest. Gives a feeling like you can do anything if you got off your ass. The guitar annoyed me at first, but I love it now I wish this song was translated... Honorable mentions to ame ni utaeba, Hello Girl, and sayounara daisan wakusei. WHITE INCARNATION - Right Here Like This. Very peaceful. I tend to zone out during this song, but in a good way. It kinda puts me in a trance. It takes away all my worries. It cheers me up when I'm sad, it enhances a good mood. And the way the solo comes in... awesome Honorable mentions to She's My Sister, Hey - I Don't Care, Tonight, bokura no Halley suisei, and Good Night. KOOL SPICE - akanai tobira no mae de. Awesome reggae song. Very pronounced bass and wonderful melody. The lyrics are amazing (can't seem to find a translation, but I'm sure I saw a translation somewhere before...) And I have no words to describe the ending of this masterpiece Honorable mentions to the rest of the album. LIVING FIELD - Girlfriend. Very hard choice. I haven't heard this song much, because it won't go on my ipod I cream my pants each time I listen to it though. Definitely one of the best pillows's songs. Honorable mentions to the rest of the album. Please Mr. Lostman - Strange Chameleon. My favorite pillows' song. The solo is, in my opinion, one of their best.Sawao gives very strong, sad emotion through his lyrics. The lyrics show Sawao's lyrical genius. Some lines to me suggest a deeper meaning. For example, "Nothing changes no matter what I do, I’m prepared to die." The pillows at the time were struggling, as we know. The pillows' songs changed greatly since they formed eight years ago and they haven't achieved much popularity. It seemed that Sawao felt the pillows were coming to an end, and he really gave it his all on this song. Honorable mentions to the rest of the album LITTLE BUSTERS - Nowhere. So many great songs on this album, it was difficult to decide. I have the lyrics/translations by my bedside so I can read them as I fall asleep. RUNNERS HIGH - Midnight Down HAPPY BIVOUAC - Beautiful Morning With You Fool on the planet - Trip Dancer. Only because I couldn't choose it for PML. Otherwise I'd choose FOTP. I love this song more and more each time I listen to it. Smile - Everyday Songs. I recently fell in love with this song. Thank You, My Twilight - Thank You My Twilight Another morning, Another pillows - Beautiful Picture. Very difficult to choose. Everything about this song is beautiful. Especially Shin's drumming and Sawao's voice This song should've been an album track it's so good. Honorable mentions to *big breath* She is Perfect, Wonderful Sight, Skeleton Liar, Lesser Hamster in Blue, Subhuman, Spiky Goose, Curly Rudy, Cherry, Plastic Flower, and sonna fuu ni sugoshitai. All brilliant songs. Penalty Life - Freebee Honey. One of the pillows' hardest rocking songs. TURN BACK - Our Halley's Comet. Only song to make me cry. I prefer this version a bit more than the WI version. GOOD DREAMS - tenshi mitai ni kimi wa tatteta. I love the power sawao gives off in this song. I love to scream out the chorus! Honorable mentions to Frontiers, Lo-Fi Boy - Fighter Girl, New Year's Eve, and Good Dreams. 90'S my LIFE returns - boku no koe ga kaze ni kesaretemo. Honorable mentions to boku wa OUTSIDER. MY FOOT - Rock'n'roll Sinners. I didn't like this song at first, but I've been listening to this song more since I saw the pillows live last march. And I'm really enjoying it. Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! - Century Creepers (Voice of the Proteus) Pied Piper - <waiting to hear every song> EDIT: disregard the following statement. I gave a list of songs and was explaining why I hadn't analyzed them. Now I know what you're thinking, "Jono's a fukking hypocrite! lol," rite? No. I don't have the time right now to give an explanation. I'm going to go back later, might be as long as monday before I get a chance to edit it. Hell, I still have to think of a top ten pillows' songs

Re: Favorite Song from Every Album
OK I won't disappoint. Pantomime - Energy: Need I say more about this song? Theres just so much ENERGY! In the melody, in the vocals, in the solo, need I go on? This song is just the ultimate pick-me-up. I can hardly ever get upset with this song playing. "Energy! Energy!! Energy!!! Energy..." 90'S my LIFE - Sukitooru tooi Tegami: This was a tough call, I just love NEVER FIND as well as this song. Ultimately I had to boil down to which delivers the goods for me quicker and that would have to go to this song. NEVER FIND just takes a bit too long to pick up (especially with the awesome ending). But with this song everything just works, the intro solo, the lilting lead guitar and melody and then that great chorus to the amazing solo, it all just works. Moon Gold - Ame ni Utaeba: This song was a no-brainer for me, it's just so catchy! The direction is great throughout the song, from the intro to the bridge (Singing in the rain and walking on the rainbow!) to the break-down/solo, everything about it just screams the pillows. To me this is the song that defined Moon Gold. "Singing in the rain and walking on the rainbow..." WHITE INCARNATION - Kono Mama Koko De: Theres just something to this song, it's rather sad but it still has a certain grace and beauty to it (Sawao seems to be able to bring this out in almost all his sad songs). The guitar solo is fantastic and really makes the song, even though it's a slow pacing song you just don't mind. "There really was something that you wanted to say to me..." Special CD - ANGEL FISH: I really enjoy this song on the Special CD, it just seems to have an odd clarity to it that just doesn't seem to be there on the Living Field version. It's like they over-produced the album version. But I just love the simplicity that the Special CD version has, it better suits the song. It just gives it more of a simple club feel, it's deconstructed but it just works. "Embracing you, if a dream like that were to never end, I wouldn't mind. It's no lie, I feel as though absolutely anything can happen..." KOOL SPICE - Sha-la-la-la: This was a tough pick as well, to be honest I enjoy Monochrome Lovers and this song just about equally. But in the end I felt I don't get as tired with this song the second or third time around, and why would I? You just have to love the simple sing-a-long chorus. Not to mention the great guitar riff and bass line, it's a great song to chill out to or go on a small drive with (especially at night through the city). Plus the solo is quite a bit of love. "No matter the situation, if it was fun; running around haphazardly. Not knowing what it was to be tired of walking; we lived in this way. Tapping my fingers and whistling, not sleeping. And for your sake alone I sing..." LIVING FIELD - NATIVE WORLD: This one was an even tougher choice but I had to give it to the unconventional Native World, the true underdog. I really can't resist it though, it's almost haunting and ghostly that song is. The dis-embodied vocals, the floating guitar-riff and especially the solo, theres something just eerily magical about it all that I can't help but enjoy listening to. "Forever overflowing, this unparalleled emotion filled me up at a lenient speed. With childish means, I went ahead and broke through. On the far side of unconsciousness, that world is waiting..." Please Mr. Lostman - STRANGE CHAMELEON: Need I say more? This song is simply so beautiful and yet it's so sad, it really is a true fine work of art and a true showcase of Sawao's song writing talent. IMO the solo is simply the best in their entire catalog and with good reason, it's simply breathtaking and completes the entire song. Truly it's a very powerful song and definitely a song that defines who the pillows are. There is hardly anything not to like about the song. "If the whole world’s a fake and there’s tricks and traps. Even if I realize it’s not alright with just the color you’re born with. Nothing changes no matter what I do, I’m prepared to die. I am a strange chameleon..." LITTLE BUSTERS - That House: This one was a close tie, mainly because I love every song on this album (it's my favorite album in their entire discography). Ultimately I had to go with That House but for an unconventional reason. That reason being this was the last song I ended up getting into, but I realize though that that was for the best because as the last song on the album for me to find appreciating it's just so good, it's a perfect little diamond shining brightly in the rough. The song is just so cozy, so wonderful, I can't help but enjoy it's whimsical melody. "I open up my umbrella that clears away rainy days. I want to walk with my memories of kindness along the road lined with sunflowers. Hello, how are you? It's wet and beautiful..." RUNNERS HIGH - NO SELF CONTROL: Once again need I say more? This song is of course my favorite pillows song, and with good reason (albeit I have no idea how to express why that reason is). I just never grow tired of this song. Oh yeah. "We dallied together in a love that had to end..." HAPPY BIVOUAC - Back Seat Dog: Another song I just can't help but enjoy. I just seem to reflect on life at times listening to this song, even though the lyrics don't ring true the melody says otherwise. It's so happy but it's has that subtle tinge of sadness in the solo, but it's a sweet sadness. "I'm still tied up in your garden, like a dog..." Fool on the planet - Fool on the planet: This song also is a no-brainer for me, but can you blame me? It's just such a great song and truly definitive of that pillows sound that we all know and love. That enchanting melody, the inspiring lyrics, etc, need I go on? One of my fondest memories of the pillows was watching Busters on the planet all the way though and then listening to the crowd sing-a-long to Fool on the planet at the end, truly a touching moment (I sang-a-long with them from my couch as well). "Just like now, I want to convey my love more deeply than anyone else. My song is your song..." Smile - Fun Fun Fun OK!: Despite the three great songs that this album is best known for I decided to go with this under-appreciated song. This song was also the song that drew me into this album. But none-the-less it's a great and enjoyable tune. From the nonsense lyrics to the sugary sweet melody and chorus, I just enjoy this song so much! "I’m just living a life thats my life of not being afraid. Always falling in love, then getting hurt from it. It’s only Fun Fun Fun OK..." Thank You, My Twilight - Thank You, My Twilight: This was another tough call for me. But ultimately I had to go with this song, it's simply a good song. I guess what decided things for me was the lyrics, they're simply touching and sublime despite how sappy or cliche they may sound. Deep down at one point in your life didn't these lyrics just seem to ring true? I think it's this type of relate-ability that goes a long way and what makes a great song great. "Even if there is no miracle, it's enough, you know? Even if today is the last day. Thank you, my twilight. Thank you, my twilight..." Another morning, Another pillows - Sonna fuu ni Sugoshitai: Another obvious song for me. Once again I must attest that this song is probably their best song to simply chill out to. And with good reason of course, it's simply an irresistible song. You just relax and let the melody sweep you away. "No matter what anyone says I just don't care, I'm not afraid. Even if I'm lonely, I'm in no hurry. I wanna live that way..." Penalty Life - Noboranai Taiyou: This is another song that is simply cozy. It's just a song you can doze off and just dream to (and this has happened to be on more than one occasion as well). "I wonder what kind of expression is on your face as you gaze at time? I just keep dreaming. I'm still pretending..." TURN BACK - Bokura no Haree Suisei: The obvious winner of my affection. This song is simply timeless and classic. The PV is just perfect and makes the song even better. This song also just rings with that definitive pillows sound that you can't find anywhere else. Truly this is one of their best songs in their catalog. "Until the day that Halley's comet shows its shadow to us once again I always, always want to be with you..." GOOD DREAMS - Walkin' on The Spiral: Now this is the song I say GOOD DREAMS truly opens with. Theres lots of energy here and the melody is infectious. It almost seems endless, like you really are walking on a spiral you'd might say. Definitely my favorite off of GOOD DREAMS (I'm still wondering why they scrapped the small version at the beginning of the documentary though). "Confused and spinning round and round in the same place, I just feel as if I'm struggling. But if I open my eyes once again I'll be closer to the sun. Walkin' on the spiral..." MY FOOT - GAZELLE CITY: Although I love Sayonara Universe I find the simplicity of GAZELLE CITY makes for a better song. This song also has that serious infectious irresistible kick some pillows songs just have (I think it's the engrish that does it for me). You just can't help but enjoy the song, even though there isn't exactly anything special to it what with it's simplicity. Not to mention this is just the perfect closing song for the album. "Come on, sunshine let's be off. Come on, sunshine I'll walk your home. Come on, sunshine let's be off. It's time for a change..." Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! - Sweet Baggy Days: Once again this is another song that just perfectly closes the album. Though this one has a bit of an odd and unconventional melody to it, however it works! And not to mention that break down at the end, it's simply a sweet sweet super swell song that I just can't help but enjoy listening to. It also makes me reminisce of better days (another charm I enjoy). "I don't dream, the sun doesn't rise. The moon doesn't come out either, only the stars flow. Are you pretending to be sad? you ask. I'm not facing it, like an animal..."
