"]Anyway, anybody else listen to FISHMANS?
They have some cool songs. My fav is Walking in the Rhythm. Sometimes I feel like it's not long enough lol.
Haha, yeah. Even though it's what, 13 minutes? I like the single version better, anyway. I like Baby Blue, Ikareta Baby, Wasurechyau Hito Toki and Night Cruising especially. Also, Weather Report and Subarashikute NICE CHOICE to add on to their long epic song list.

My current addiction is Mute Math, a sort of electronic rock band. They are supposed to have a new album out this summer, and I hope it's soon.

One of my cohosts introduced me to this band, and I was blown away. They did a show in Boston in December, but they were the opening act (meaning only a 25-minute set). Here's hoping a headlining tour will be coming soon.

No, what I mean is a lot of music that is NOT emo is labeled as such.
Yeah, when I first heard about Jimmy Eat World, I just thought it was a cool new rock band. Not at any point while I was listening to Bleed American did I think anything was different about it stylistically from other rock artists at the time, just a unique sounding band. At that point, I wasn't fully aware of genre labeling, and when I read emo on the internet, I was like wat?
Jimmy Eat World originated in the 90's (a teenager in band years) alongside and influenced by bands I consider models of the quintessential emo formula (I'm not sure if I would call it a genre, myself), like Fugazi and Braid/Hey Mercedes. I won't deny their complicity in the pop-sheen retrofitting of the idea (and it's only become more pronounced as they've matured); I'll only claim that their mix is a little more playful, wiser, and prettier than I can resist--plus I think Futures and Chase This Light are every bit as worthwhile today as Clarity or Frame & Canvas or Repeater were back then, though for different reasons.
Also, Paramore. Riot!.
"For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic"
"That's What You Get"
Hayley Williams is amazing. And her voice carries everything.
Lastly, my favorite. Bluebeard. Bluebeard.
"Room 501"
"Snow"
Maybe they had to remain unknown because their guitars were big enough to sweep the whole earth away, but I'll never forget the time I spotted them chasing comets in the twilight as if punk and grunge had finally discovered The Big Music.
That about exhausts my emo collection. Hopefully these were enough to systematically destroy any indie and/or popular cred I could have garnered, so no one will ever be surprised when I admit to liking something someone else doesn't.

I'm sorry, did you just call Bluebeard and Fugazi "emo"?
We can't be friends. You have no clue what indie/punk rock is.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
Uh, last i checked, Fugazi was widely considered post-hardcore. Emo's barely even a genre. Almost any band in the world can be stashed in the emo folder. It's way too subjective to link Fugazi's mathy hardcore style to power pop like Jimmy Eat World. And Braid/Hey Mercedes was more towards the late 90s, with Hey Mercedes not forming till the turn of the century. I can see Braid and Fugazi being compared, but bringing Jimmy Eat World in there.......eeeeehhh . but i'm not gonna argue genres, because it's stupid. Bands today are influenced by too many kinds of music to be sorted without coming up with yet another stupid subgenre to accomodate their style.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
Every type of music categorization is more subjective and fluid than most give it credit for. And subjective determinations of band playing styles and themes is a strange thing to base friendship off of, but okay. Post-hardcore is also "widely considered" closely affiliated to emo, math rock, indie rock, and other various interrelated categories and sub-categories. But I tend not to worry too much about what's "widely considered" in music criticism or popular circles and try to concentrate on what I think bands sound like. And there's a trajectory that I can follow from Fugazi's murky and brutal punk minimalism to Braid's steadier introspective rock to Jimmy Eat World's honed crossover appeal. If you can't hear it, well, you might first want to wait until you've listened to everything by all of them (I have), but if you still get nothing, there's no need to be upset about it. And yeah, Braid started in 1993, and disbanded in 1999. Then they reorganized into Hey Mercedes, sans Broach. I do really like these bands, you know. :T Arguing about genres is certainly pointless, but talking about them doesn't have to be. This forum seems to be all about the arguing though, huh? The Wonder Stuff. Never Loved Elvis. "Mission Drive" "Inertia" "Caught in my Shadow" One of my top ten favorite albums, and "Inertia" is one of my all-time favorite songs. This sounds like folk rock inverted from syrupy and plodding to irresistibly fun and dance-worthy.

Re: Artist you're currently listening to.
I'm just saying I believe that trying to classify bands into certain genres is pointless because it's relative to the listener. I could preach all day that fucking Diana Ross & The Supremes and Little Richard influenced a band like Fall Out Boy, but who the hell cares? I'm neither right nor wrong, nor am I even making a point or saying it for any particular reason other than I want my opinion and vastly superiorer indiarrr knowledge to be known to other people. Someone else saying otherwise doesn't mean they're trying to insult my intelligence. I don't have to listen to the WHOLE fugazi (which i have), hey mercedes (i have), braid (i have), or Jimmy Eat World discography (which I haven't, and for good reason) for my opinion to be at all valid in a discussion as subjective as who influenced who. And I'm aware of Hey Mercedes basically having the same lineup as braid minus their guitarist Chris Broach. But how many people do you expect to actually even be aware of Braid, Hey Mercedes, or even Fugazi here? It just sounds like you're trying to talk over the head of the average Pillows fan, honestly. you might like this site a little better: http://www.keikaku.netthey talk about music a lot more in depth there, and are made up mostly of self proclaimed 'indie as fuck' music fans. Enjoy yourself.

HAY GAIZ I LIKSE ME SUM JEW AND BRAIT EYZ DOES I GET THE E.M.O. LABEL YET?!
Anywho, whenever I hear people talk about Fugazi, they usually call 'em emo TBH. In fact, I might be incorrect, but I think a member of their's is included in the Emo Game (Which is bad ass.)
On the subject of bands that are generally considered emo, anyone else listen to Piebald? D: I love Piebald.

Not sure which bands you mean, but if you want, listen to Paramore's "That's What You Get" and compare it to Bluebeard's "Room 501". Besides Paramore being more mainstream, the likeness seems pretty clear to me. *shrug* As for Fugazi, all I meant to imply was that they existed within the primordial mix of bands associated with the term, and influenced a lot of those bands (including Jimmy Eat World).
skoolyard, I'm sorry to say I actually don't speak Antagonese or Incomprehensiblish...but have your people call my people, leave your name and number after the tone, and remember to submit all written complaints in triplicate. We'll work this out somehow. S{:^)

I doubt I could find two more similarly invigorating rock songs even if I dipped a pair of them into concentrated Red Bull.

Fine Lines. If you can stop calling awesome bands like Fugazi and Bluebeard "emo," which wasn't even thrown around all that much until recently, we might be able to be friends after all. I trust you've also tried Husking Bee and Mars Eurythmics?

They sometimes say them out loud to other people. It doesn't mean they're trying to prove anyone wrong or insult anyone, JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE DIFFERENT FROM YOUR OWN. Yeah we don't have a number, just a homepage, located at http://www.dictionary.com. Just look up 'subjectivity' and 'opinion' and our email address is somewhere on one of those pages. Let me know if you have trouble locating it.
