alright right on thanks for the opinions.
I was sort of concerned about the humbucker, but I realized i kind of like that bit of heavy tone to it. I play blues/latin blues so I'm sort of torn between single coil (like clapton or something) or humbucker (like santana and what not). The hss seems like that middle sitting niche so i think i might go for that.
but like you said, the standard single coil strats and tele's might just be better.....

I really like LPs for their tone. It's true that it has a more grungier tone, but other guitars can achieve that. I played a strat copy(Don't remember what it was) but that had the neck like strat and the sound of a LP and I really liked it a lot. I may actually buy that guitar or just get an LP or a Strat because my guitar LP jr can only go so far

I thought it would be important to mention that an amp and effects pedals have much more control over a guitar's actual "sound" than the guitar itself, be it "heavy", "bright", "distorted", etc. The differences between most guitars are very minimal, and this difference can be made even more miniscule by adjusting amp settings, effects, and the like.

"distorted" isn't the sound of a guitar, it's an effect. However, things like "bright," "heavy," "light," "fat," etc, are definitely characteristics inherent to the guitar and its pickups, and the amp doesn't really effect it. For an example, telecasters on the bridge pickup have a bright, twangy sound, no matter what amp you play them through (unless it's broken), and this sound is hard to emulate with another guitar.

I can get the same sounds on my Strat by making it use the bridge pickup, and the same on my Viper-50 by using the bridge pickup and adjusting my amp settings for higher mids and highs, and low low's (lol).

I don't know what kind of strat you have, but no strat I've ever touched has been able to get that Telecaster twang, no matter what combination of tone and pickup settings I've used. It's more than just the tones, it's the type of pickup, the type of wood, the shape of the guitar, how the pickup is put on the guitar, and a combination of other things.

That said, it's mostly just the pickup. The guitar is just there to look cool.

Funny, that was more or less the concept behind the original solid body guitar - the Les Paul.
