...due to it's fans?

I don't know why, but I find Gainax fans particularly annoying for no real reason (Eva).. and I hate to be "that guy" but this topic has been bugging me for a long time.

FLCL still probably is my favorite OVA, mainly because of the Pillows, but it seems like I'm growing into despising it because of it's fans. Not to try to offend anyone, but is anyone else tired of hearing people say "Ride on Shooting Star is the best pillows song" and every song between 1996 and 2000 being referred to as "that flcl song" or something. It just feels demeaning to the band. Its true that it does bring people into becoming fans of the band... and even real fans of the band (as in listening beyond FLCL OST 1 &2).. but for now it's annoying.

I'm sure this is a taboo topic, but I want to hear what people think anyways. There is no true reason to dislike FLCL, but do you find yourself disliking it for the same reason?

Disliking something due to its fans rather than the actual content indicates the person cares about their "image" too much. Does liking underground Japanese industrial techno make one cool? Does liking the Japanese singer Aiko make one a lame sucker for airy pop?

Go ahead and hate the obnoxious aspects of the fandom of FLCL. The "CARNIVAL HAS [b]LYRICS[/b]!?" guys, and the "my screen name is HaruharaHarukoxx099kawaiichan" girls. I admit it really irritates me when people show such devotion and enthusiasm in something (ROSS, Hybrid Rainbow, Advice, and Crazy Sunshine), and show no effort at all to actually learn more about what they're "into". I think most of the resentment the pillows' hard-core fanbase has towards the FLCL-gang is that the devotion the FLCL-gang exudes is just...shallow.

Yes, most of us probably heard of/got into the pillows from FLCL. That fact shouldn't be "embarrassing", and I don't think it is. And despite how much I hate it when "FLCL-tards" shout out names of the key pillows tracks in FLCL at their US shows...it doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the OVA.

So, do your part. Educate people, tell them the pillows have been going since '89. Tell them about their huge discography, spanning multiple styles. Guide them to www.pirouzu.net or the pillows' Wikipedia entry.

edit: but then on the other hand, media doesn't exist in a vacuum. When you listen to My Chemical Romance, you're not just thinking of the music. You're thinking of the gross merchandising, the eye-makeup and hair, the emo poetry of suburban spoiled teens, too-tight MCR hoodies. It's bound to affect how you interpret the music. There's some sort of hypocrisy going on in here somewhere, but I'm too tired to put any more thought into this post.

Bottom line: enjoy what you enjoy, don't be a douche about it, and if you see like-minded people who are just at the tip of the iceberg, burn them Please Mr. Lostman and Kool Spice, and shoe them how deep the rabbit hole goes.

This is a complaint about anime fans in general. I really enjoy anime sometimes, but anyone who wishes to maintain any semblance of normalcy in society would shudder at the thought of comparisons being drawn between himself and the average "otaku."

The best thing you can do is get over it, like what you like, and do your part to change the image by being a normal person.

Everyone self monitors to some degree. Just face it, your actions and preferences are highly influenced by what you think others will think of you. It's called being a human.

I guess I know what he is trying to say. That the people who only recognice the pillows by FLCL. It's like before Honestly i use to watch wrestling. And some I remember "The Beautiful People"song, By Marlyn Manson. I use to think it was Just one of those songs created for the show.
But later on i learned.

So what he is saying is that it annoys him that people think they know the pillows by just knowing and hearing the stuff that they put in FLCL.
They act all knowing and big snobs that eventually when you tell them about "other" pillows work they'll overly exagerate.
For example. A freind (who i'll kill someday) i use to know. He wanted to become a "rocker" So another freind lend him a lot of albums. And the next day he claims that he likes each and everyone. So after that. Just by hearing the song atleast once. He thinks he likes them and knows them.

I guess is the people that exploit the songs. One Life is an amazing song. Most of the anime fans will know it for that one song from that one show.

I like FLCL still. I like the overall plot. Not just for the pillows songs being there. Hell honestly if they were to put a different song list. With the same passion the pillows songs gave the show. It still would be a good anime.

So so so little kids who think they know the pillows even though they never heard songs besides there FLCL ones are idiots and should be beaten mocked and teased for the rest of their lifes.

Your poll should be changed to 'do you dislike FLCL for the fans that exagerate for being the best anime with the pillows blahblahblah something in those lines. I'm still a fan but not a fan that will cosplay one of the characters. mmm someone should make a post about who many people have cosplayed before.

This is a complaint on anime fans as a whole. I do get irritated when people say they love a certain Japanese band, but can only name one song by them (which always happens to be from anime).

What pisses me off more are the same fans, but they don't even know how to pronounce the fucking name! There's this douchebag that sits with me and my friends, and this is what he says:

"You know, my favorite bands are 'El Arc on Chail' and 'Tim Revolution.'" I had to hold my fist down to keep it from slugging that bastard's face (for mispronouncing both names and for liking T.M. Revolution).

I loooove FLCL, I first saw it at a time in my life when it hit me real deep. However, while I appreciate anime and probably own more anime DVDs than most die-hard anime nerds I know, I've never really been a part of the "social" (lol) aspect of the anime community. Basically, I don't know what the FLCL fans are like

I did want to punch the one "Carnival has lyrics?" guy I heard at the ACen show in the throat though.

I only know one chick who I guess I could say is a Gainax whore because she's crazy into Eva.

Yeah, I didn't realize the party I went to on valentine's day was a "Club Japan" anime. It wasn't much fun, and the people there were otaku.

Pondering the subject of why I felt these otaku were so... odd/loserish, I came to the conclusion that it's because they're devoting their entire lives to Japan with fevered ferocity. Then, I was like, "Waitaminit, so am I. What makes me any different?" Upon introspection, I discovered that while I am basing my life on the prospect of going to Japan and doing something there, I was going to do it because I appreciate and enjoy what I know of the place. These people, on the other hand, seem completely deluded, and would likely move to Japan, thinking that absolutely everyone will accept and love them and GLORIOUS NIPPON.

These GLORIOUS NIPPON otaku live, breath, and eat manga/anime/video games. They don't process what they've done. They've just disattached with reality. Then you've got the swarms of idiots who just think any cartoon is magnificent or whatever... In both cases, they'll only know anime songs or the really mainstream Japanese artists.

I love FLCL because I find it an endearing story about a kid who is growing up. If other people like it, that's cool; we have something in common, but if you're worried about your image for watching an anime as completely random as FLCL is... perhaps you should just be a hermit and design everything you wear yourself so you'll have your own image.
