Pillows Musical Periods
So the idea struck me when replying to those who replied in the other thread I posted. And i thought I'd be interesting to discuss The Pillows periods so to speak.
I believe the pillows (and when talking to my friends we refer to it as such) have had many different periods. In the begining They have this fresh normal new band kinda feel, finding their sound. Then comes the Jazz Period (refer to Kool Spice and Living field) which has a hint of Funk to it ( NAH NAH NAH NAKED SHUFFLE!!!! hehe) then they start to mellow the Jazz and turn more * for lack of better term* generic rock [still with their own unique sound]
Then they come out to the "Rock" Period, ( Little busters, Runners High, Happy B, everything from FLCL) and if you listen they cut back on a lot of the "high end" of the notes and are more power chords, bar chords, and nice melodic solos. And then They come to their new zone and its hard to explain its still pillows and still extraordinary but ive yet to fully describe it.
Obviously I cut this down and didnt get as specific but if you guys are bored or interested Id love to hear your input.
And my friend made a joke, he said every new album the pillows came out with around and after Runners High, he goes " its like everytime they got a new pedal, they make a CD that emphasises the new effect" I thought it was funny. lol

yes you are correct,
When Kenji Ueda was leader they did not have an actual genre, they just wanted to make good music "like the Beatles". This was phase 1.
After Ueda left, Sawao was influenced by new member Kashima and experimented with different genres. He wrote tiny boat taking other peoples opinions into account but this was never financially successful. Band almost breaks up. This was phase 2.
Sawao decides to no longer listen to other peoples opinions on his music. He decides to go with simple rock music and writes strange chameleon as his last ditch effort. It becomes popular among radio listeners and popularity grows. This was phase 3.
the pillows joins avex trax and starts appearing on main stream TV. Songs become less sad (ie ladybird girl, tokyo bambi, go go jupiter etc). Phase 4. (unofficial)

Nah, it's more along the lines of "the majority of their fans consider it to be like this." It just happens that the majority of the pillows's fans are Japanese (surprise).

I liked the pillows most before they released LITTLE BUSTERS. The albums Kool Spice and Living Field (ESPECIALLY KOOL SPICE), were just so perfect. If I had to choose my favorite tracks from the two albums, they'd have to be Twilight Park Waltz, Akanai Tobira No Mae De, Sunday, and Angel Fish (though I like the version on the Special Pillows release CD from 93).
After the Little Busters album, the pillows released awesome songs as well, but they sounded so good with the jazz sound, I fell in love.

WALKIN' ON THE SPIRAL says that there are 3 musical phases, too.

I see, hey how do i know whats been talked about and what hasn't been? Is there a spot that could sum this all up. I'm really sorry, I'm trying my best to post accurately but I've posted one "super post" that was too long and it slipped my mind being the last forum i was in was Gaia Online 2 years or more back. And then I want to have an intelligent discussion and its already happened. I'm really sorry, no one's exactly warned me, theyve corrected me and Id just like to apoligize to the mods, i suck ( hell im probably posting this in the wrong place too) but thanks for putting up with me >.<
But im glad to hear and see that and be corrected and theres a more uniform way to refering to their periods/phases. Most members here are japanese? is there anyone who actually lives in japan?
