popularity of the band in america
sorta new here. i was on the previous board, but didn't post much. anyways, i have been pondering this these past few days. when the pillows come to america (that is if they do come) and they show up on conan (which i hope happens. bands like the pillows and other not so mainstream bands show up on that show anyway), do you think that MTV will start playing their videos? what if they get as popular as blink 182?
i used to like the misfits, but i stopped because they got trendy. same with blink 182. now i am not saying that i will abandon the pillows, because i love their songs to death. my concern is that i will be labeled as trendy. i hate being labeled that. but off course, for economic reasons, the pillows are better off. my main taste in music is from bands that are not that well known. "underground" if you will. i don't know if any of you have thought about these things. but i impatiently await their arrival!

It's silly not to like a good band just cause its mainstream(but you did right in those two cases:). Although I guess it's kind of cool liking a band no ones know of, but at the same time you want more people to hear yourr music get them to like them.... enoguh wisetalk... but i don't think they will appear on Conan... has any japanese band been to Conan yet?

I feel the same way. I'm always raving about some bizare indie or punk band, but if my friends start listening to them, I start to not like them as much because they start humming the songs and stuff. It's really weird.

I don't think they will get to a level of popularity so it will be necessary to worry about that. But, who knows? I could be wrong.

i don't know if there ever has been. even if there ever has, its probably been less than 2. but i don't think it would matter if there ever has been a japanese band on conan. but like i said, they seem like a band that WOULD play conan.
jokerstrademark, you are right. it is weird when other people, especially those are all about mainstream music, humming songs from a band that you discoverd before they were popular. so i say its a mixed bag. i guess the reason we want other people to hear our music is either to show off how much better it is, OR, it could be make people stop listening to crappy music such as blink-182. but also, like i said, in terms of economics, the pillows are better off. i kinda relate this to a dicussion i had with a friend a few years back. we came to the conclusion that travis barker, blink 182's drummer, was better in the aquabats in terms of being cool. but for economic reasons, he is better off with blink 182.

I know the feeling. Back in '98, I stumbled across a little game called Grand Theft Auto and loved it to death. I showed it to my friends. They didn't have the same passion as I had, but it didn't matter. It was a great little "underground" title. You can probably see where I'm going with this.
When GTA3 happened it felt like a part of me was lost. Like one of my little secrects were not of much a trill keeping anymore. But then, you have titles like Clock Tower 3 that would make you actually be happy that it went mainstreme(like supporting your favorite football team), but it just wasn't in the cards.
The Pillows have a pretty wide spred fanbase that's devoted and growing, but I don't think you'll have to worry about them appearing on TRL. It would be nice if they did something for Japan, like The Beatles did for Britian.

If anything like that were ever to happen, it would be our duty to immediately get in contact with the Pillows and urge them to give MTV the bird.

i don't think the Pillows will become mainstream because of the language barrier. My friends who listen to american rock can't listen to not because sucks the music sucks they just can't understand them as close minded as that is.

I wouldn't say the language barrier will be a to big matter. I remeber in sweden a couple years ago when a german pop star who singed in german got number 1 here for many weeks... and you know how that lanugage sounds... HORRIBLE!
