So basically, what clouds was trying to say, in English:
The emotion of a song may be gleaned through the music itself, rather than through a comprehension of the lyrics.
Now, for my personal opinion:
A "song" is comprised of two aspects. A musical aspect, and a literary aspect. Each bears its own emotional expression. Many times they will reflect the same thing, but often they will contrast. It is the combination of the two that makes a "song" unique from both a "score" and "piece of poetry." The interplay between the two expressions, whether they be the same or different, in turn creates a unique composite expression.
Essentially, what I'm saying is that neither the music or the lyrics are solely responsible for what makes a "song," and one is not more important than the other. Many musicians will be led to believe that the music is what's important, and the average person with no musical training will tend to focus on the lyrics. But to truly understand a song, you must have both.

Totally agreed there. Most people here always exclaim how their love for a song only increases when they get the translation and understand what it is Sawao is singing about.
I wish this interview was translated a bit better, or that we could look at the original Japanese, because the phrasing is pretty bad, and the guy translated Sawao to talk in way that's far from his character. Oh well, still really awesome stuff.

thanks very much, omnistry!
i'm really more interested on the album now that i read the interview. and i loved the fact that a month ago i put my sister, who is 4 years old, to listen to Youngster. she liked and danced the song. i sometimes fill her head with J music, lol.
"...YOUNGSTER, which was meant for cheering young people up...
i was amazed, cause that's exactly what happened to her.
i also have a 2 secs part of video where she does a totally stylistic dance listening to Runners High intro.

MY personal opinion (without sounding like a douche):
Lyrics are just a vessel for vocals to have melody in a song. It goes without saying that you need to have words to sing, rather that just making noise, which is what makes vocal work so intricate in a song. I don't look to a song to necessarily be poetic to be enjoyable, and I don't think a lot of people do. Case and point (possible a bad choice), but look at rap. Most of the time rappers are yelling out phrases that you won't even understand, but to rap fans, it sounds good. I really didn't care what Strange Chameleon was about because I liked it and I guess it's great that some of you liked it better after understanding the lyrics. I'm just saying lyrics do not have to be a big part of what makes a good song.

I pretty much agree with BlazingSage. With hip-hop the emphasis is on rhythm more than melody, so the vocals serve a rhythmic purpose more than melodic. Of course, I find plenty of rock bands like Don Cabellero much more rhythmically interesting, so I don't totally get the whole rap thing.

Hint: With most generic rap, play six notes, hit a cymbol or whatever. Rinse. Repeat. Repeat. And re-fucking-peat.
There are more in-depth rappers who actually tell stories ala "he doesn't rap. he tells." And I find them to be more respectable, but half of the crap that goes out is dumb "gangsta" rap, which is pretty much worthless, imo.

More of this.
Seriously, I don't really consider rap worthy of being called music. It lacks any amount of intricacy, good melody/harmony, and all the other things that make good music.

I also learned to enjoy the pillows songs when I understood the lyrics as well. It adds a new demension to the songs that I thought wasn't possible. I even began to like songs that I had previously hadn't like before when I learned what the lyrics meant.

This thread is not about rap. Keep off-topic discussions in the pillows section to a minimum.
