I'm assuming it's probably around $200, his budget. But yeah, a laptop with only a 20GB HDD? That alone is almost reason enough to forego it. The actual memory isn't an issue, but as a general rule you can tell what kind of package you're getting based on the memory if it's a laptop.
This is somewhat true, but really, the price is really the general rule to go by. Laptop hard drive capacity is tricky to go by, because every laptop ranging from mediocre to awesome will have relatively the same capacity, which is generally around 100GB. Of course, like you say, if you see a laptop with less than 60GB capacity, you're probably looking at an outdated hunk of junk.
With laptops, I think your primary concerns should be processor speed, RAM, and capacity. Hell, for the everyday user, just going to www.dell.com and picking the most basic package should suffice. By ordering from there, you can be confident that your computer will be functional and current for all your every day needs. If you need something more specific, odds are you know what it is, and can customize what you need from any manufacturer.

Well had some nice post. A book. Not a bad idea really Well the reason i want a laptop would be to play Doom =D The original one alnog with wads. It's funny you say that 20gb isn't good..this computer tower im using has only 20gb. I same specs as the laptop but it has ram 256. Two of them. I play warcraft 3 in it. But mostly listen to music. Are ram for a laptop the same as the one for a desktop?Or different type?

there's all different kinds of ram, it matters what kind it is, not so much as to whether it's in a laptop or a pc. i'm almost certain that that 128mbs is like 100mhz SDram not any decent DDR or whatever they're running these days, and you will NOT be able to play wc3 on it...if you're set on buying a laptop though and only want to play old school doom and not really do much else, go with what you got, but you literally won't be able to do much of anything besides that. Otherwise go with what sheer said and just go to dell. If you're looking for a pc, you could write what basic things you want to do with it, and i could give you a list of parts to order and you could build it or what kind of computer to buy. I used to be a computer nerd 4 years ago, i'm outta the loop a bit, but i'm sure i could easily find you a deal on a computer/walk you through the building process.

The reason a lot of people think 20gb isn't a good idea in a laptop, or any sort of computer is...it's really not a lot of storage capacity. Seriously. Unless you just like to surf the internet, type documents, store a little bit of music, and play a few games...you're gonna want more.
The laptop I'm on has a 120 GB capacity, I've only had it for...about half a year, and I'm up to 69.34 GB. Sure, I should back most of the "fluff" (videos, etc) up onto an external hard drive...but it fills up fast.
Out of a possible 120 GB, 21.64 GB is all music. And nothing's in full CD/AIFF quality.
So yeah. I'd really consider upping your harddrive capacity.
And something good to know for someone who "doesn't know nothing" about laptops...especially low price range ones...
- You're really limited in how you can upgrade them. If you decide to upgrade your RAM or HDD in the future, that should be easy enough (for a technician)...but as for anything else...no.
- You're paying for portability. If you don't really NEED a computer that's easy to take along with you, just put your cash into a desktop. The money will get you a better desktop than a laptop, so really evaluate if you need a laptop. If you've got a lot of cash to spend on a computer...then I'd PERSONALLY go for a nice laptop, unless you're really into high-end gaming. The portability can be really nice.
- Just hit up dell.com for a cheap laptop, as sheer said. You shouldn't encounter too many problems.
- Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne is a fantastic game. Thankfully, Blizzard makes their games so they can run on a wide range of machines. Unfortunately, many other cool PC games to come out now (I'm talking mainly about FPSes) will REQUIRE better system specs.
So yeah, just consider:
- Do I NEED my computer to be portable?
- How much do I care about gaming?
- How much space do I really need to store files? If you can seriously get by with just 20 GB, then by all means, go ahead.

GR's going to have to do some ninja-editing after I make this reply to his double post (which I think was a screwed up edit).

Well, look at it this way, you can get an external USB HDD with 80GB for forty bucks, which is cheaper than the laptop, probably one-fourth the price with quadruple the memory. Of course, you can't lug your desktop everywhere, but if you only have 20GB, it's really nice to have more. the pillows discography is over a gig without any videos for crying out loud.
To give you a picture of how low RAM you'll have... I have firefox running with five tabs open--Google and IM threads. It's at 49,360 K. Winamp is also open, and it's running at a solid 30,124 K--and I'm not using any fancy-schmancy plug-ins like MilkDrop, just a .psf player and an .snf player. That being said, listening to music and intraweb browsing can become a chore on a PC with low RAM.
Do you know the sound specs on your laptop? Because a lot of laptops have really shitty sound quality and really reduced max volume output EVEN WITH HEADPHONES . So the laptop may not be the best choice for listening to music.
ALTHOUGH this has given me an idea. Do you have an mp3 player? If not, go ahead and buy one. It should be enough to keep you happy pretty much wherever you go.

if you're going to get a laptop, i recommend an averratec one. mine has held up speedwise for 3 years.

::facepalm::
asl?
Keep in mind that nearly every piece of electronic hardware on the market nowadays can play Doom. Quake 2 and The Sims are...yeah. Not so hot.
And as sheer said: Did you actually READ the responses to your thread? Laptops, especially old ones, are VERY hard to upgrade, and you're VERY limited in what you can do.
