Even though my friends (Kaze and Rasengan) and I didn't actually get to see the show due to age limit, we were able to meet the pillows and grab some signatures, here's our story.
We got to the King King around 7:25-7:30. We went around the back where there was a parking lot and a line. After hanging out for about five minutes, figuring out what to do, Kaze stood in shock as he said, "Is that Shinichi over there?" He was pointing to the right side of the door, where the person stood, smoking a cigarette. We approached the man and to our amaze we found out that it was, indeed, Sato Shinichiro, drummer for the pillows. We stood in amazement and total silence. Finally I perked up and said, "Errm... Sato-san, sign?" And I gave him my guitar, along with Kaze's sharpie. To my amazement, he signed my guitar, I nodded and said, "Thank you, arigato, Sato-san." And sat down, literally shaking is disbelief, Kaze got his Terminal Heaven single signed and Rasengan (will be referred to as Ras) got his shirt signed. Kaze then told me to stand up; a man took a picture of Ras, Kaze, Sato, and me with Kaze's camera. We then sat down as Sato went into the bar, shaking and in disbelief.
About ten minutes after that a man with an orange shirt and the word "Delicious" printed three time came out of the bar and quickly pulled out a cigarette. This man was Manabe Yoshiaki, lead guitarist for the pillows. We quickly stood up, now beginning to shake again as we all said, "Manabe-san, sign?" He smiled and nodded, then signed our gear. We then stood next to him and the same man took our picture, I then asked him, "Sawao, inside?" And pointed to the inside of the bar, he responded, "We come back, May, Chicago." He didn't answer my question, but I didn't care, Manabe went back into the bar, we sat down and continued to shake and laugh, we actually got to meet two of the three pillows members. We then asked the man who took our pictures to ask if the concert was a 21+ plus, we just wanted a confirmation. It was, Kaze then asked if all the stuff to buy was inside, it was but the man said that after the pillows play he'll bring out some stuff and we can buy it there.
We continued to sit for about 15 minutes, hoping Sawao or Jun (the guest bassist) would come out when suddenly a bouncer came and informed us we couldn't sit there. We got up and moved to the back of the line where we met and talked with one of Kaze's friends who came from Mexico just to see the pillows show. He was in the ticket pre-order line, when we left him to see the show we went to the back of the ticket line. The very same bouncer who told us we couldn't sit down asked if we were 21 or older, we told him we weren't and politely asked us to leave the premises. So the three of us went all the way to the end of the driveway and hung out there for a good 20 minutes. Kaze's friend came back and told us all about the concert; we stood around wondering whether to go or not when Ras asked me, directing his attention to two Japanese females leaning against a wall, "Are those the Noodles?" I turned to Kaze and asked the same, he didn't remember so I went up to the two females and said, "Errm... Excuse me, Noodles?"
The female to the right, Yoko, smiled and nodded. I lifted up my guitar and handed it to her, she was a bit surprised but I still asked, "Errm... Sign?" She nodded again and smiled, then I handed my guitar to the female left of her, Ayumi (I think) and asked her the same. About halfway through Ayumi's signed Jun Suzuki, bassist for the pillows, came out of the bar. Ras flipped; Jun is his favorite bassist next to the bassist for Slipknot. After getting my guitar signed I thanked the two and went to Jun, I was the last person to get my stuff signed. The people around Jun began speaking with him, I looked to my left and looked shocked, then stuttered to Kaze, "Du--- Dude, it's, Sa--- Sawao!" We all raced to Sawao, I was in so much shock I began calling him "Sato." He laughed at my mistake and I corrected myself. We went back to the Noodles and decided to take a picture with them, my friend Ras "accidentally" grabbed the asses of both Yoko and Ayumi, and I doubt they noticed it.
After the massive signing, the man who promised to bring us some of the merchandise came to us, Ras picked up a medium-size t-shirt, Kaze and I picked up the album Penalty Life. I then turned back to Sawao and Jun and asked them to sign my album, Kaze pointed out that I need to take off the plastic of the album otherwise the signing would be moot. Luckily Sawao had some other things to sign; I was in a rush to take off the plastic. After getting it off I presented it to Sawao and he signed it, followed by Jun. I, accompanied by Kaze, went to the Noodles and presented my album, they looked at the album and then I, Yoko said, a bit surprised, "Priozu?" Kaze then quickly defended me by saying, "We forgot your CD." She nodded and giggled slightly, she then signed my CD followed by Ayumi.
Sawao was across from me, before heading away from the group I had to get one thing settled, a mystery in the pillows world, the lyrics to the song, No Substance. The song is part of a compilation album along with another pillows song, 21 Fingers. People often wondered the lyrics for No Substance so I went up to Sawao and asked, "Sawao... Errm... No Substance, lyrics." He looked at me and blinked, I tried to explain a bit clearer, "Song, No Substance, lyrics?" He repeated softly, "Lyrics... No Substance... Ah!" He nodded and was about to speak when suddenly the bouncer came and said, "Everyone to the side!" He then looked at the three of us, Kaze, Ras, and me and said, "I told you guys you can't be here." Sawao looked around a bit surprised, he thought the bouncer was also speaking to him. I said, "Alright, we'll leave." So Ras, Kaze, and I thanked Sawao and headed away from the driveway.
We left the driveway and walked down the street, we turned the corner and walked a bit more when Ras said, "Wait, isn't that Manabe and Sato?" We walked up to them and lo-and-behold, it was them, talking with some friends as others passed them. These two were complete strangers to most Americans, it was funny to me, this group of people I was ecstatic to see can just blend in with other Americans. I asked Sato and Manabe to sign my copy of Penalty Life seeing as how they didn't earlier, I had it signed. We then had a group picture, Ras, Sato, Manabe, Kaze, and me. Afterwards the three of us thanked Sato, Manabe, and the one who took the picture and headed to the left of the group.
We looked at the gate; this gate blocked us from Sawao and the people who went/played at the concert. I then turned back to Manabe and Sato then told Kaze and Ras, "Hey, let's go and try to talk to them. So their English is bad, but it never hurts to try." When we were about to go, the two started to go back to the driveway, where I assume they would meet up with Sawao, Jun, and the Noodles. We tried to go back to the driveway but saw the bouncer who kicked us out before and decided it wasn't worth the trouble. So we went back to the front of the King King where we heard a band playing, I wanted to punch myself. If we had only went to the front of the bar when the pillows were playing, we could have heard them, but alas, we didn't. I called my dad, he came to pick us up, dropped off Kaze at his house, Ras at my house where he called his dad and picked him up.
All in all, I have to say that this day was the best day of my life. My cheap, run-down guitar is now worth something and my first official pillows CD is signed. Needless to say that these two things will rarely, if ever, leave my sight.
