I didn't like what they did with Davey Jones. How he just obeyed every command since they had his heart... it made him seem too.. ehh I don't know like a push over.
I also think the marriage part was just out of place, I didn't like it. It was still a good movie. And I still liked the part with the monkey pulling out the gun

The writers made a funny on that.
They even point it out in the second film.
The pirate with the glass eye says something like "Do you mean like in the physical sense or the metaphorical sense?" when they are talking about the heart in the chest.
They reversed the usual.

Yeah, I know that... thats why I wasn't so surprised when I saw that. But I did like at the end how he still tried to kill Will even though Jack was still able to kill him. Another thing I that I disliked a bit was how in this movie Davey Jones and all the other cursed pirates were just standing next to the people as if nothing. In the first movie it was a "surprise" to see the cursed pirates but here its as if they were an everyday thing of everyones life.

they did get used to them awfully quick, but it's not a big deal.

loved the first, mildly enjoyed the second, and fairly strongly disliked this movie, for many reasons. oh, and
SPOILERS AHEAD.
first of all, the movie had about 100 or so treacheries and double-crossings and triple crossings, and no, i had absolutely no problem following them at all, they just got reeealy fucking tedious. as an example: when they get back to the black pearl at the middle..ish of the movie and it switches hands and alliances are formed and switched every 20 seconds for about 10 minutes.
Also, making elizabeth swann pirate king=complete BS, and then her wannabe braveheart speech to the crew on the black pearl just made me cringe in embarrassment
the multiple sub-plots that never went anywhere were also really annoying, i saw this movie when it first came out, and coupled with the fact that it's 5am, i'm forgetting a lot of them, but if elaboration is wanted, i'll respond tomorrow afternoon
let's see here...also, didn't like how the whole Calypso sub-plot was developed for just about the whole movie, then all she did was turn into a few thousand crabs and cause a whirlpool.
notice i'm not adding a few things in here, because my suspension of disbelief can take them in stride (sparrow's dad serving absolutely no purpose, the whole fleet of ships retreating from just a few pirate vessels), but the other things i mentioned were way too big of an annoyance.
Now, i enjoy a good swashbuckling movie, as i said, i loved the first movie (and treasure island, though the last time i saw that was about 10 years ago), and i don't mind entertainment for entertainment's sake, but i like having at least a half-decent plot. This movie played out like a potheads fantasy, every time something began to get slightly boring or start developing, some random shit would pop up and they'd chase that sub plot around for a few minutes until they could distract us with something else.

This entire movie series is overrated. I thought each of the movies had about the same level of quality, which was decent. I don't understand why the first movie gets so much worship in retrospect - it was no better than either of the sequels.

I'd say you're partially right, Thinliine. The whole series is overrated, but I'd say the first one was maybe a three star movie, whereas the second was two, and the third was one. I definitely don't think they are equal in terms of quality, but you're right that none of them rise above moderately entertaining.

I'd say that as the series went on, it got less coherent, while action scenes flourished.
Unlike you two, however, I thought it was a decent series. Characters got much less interesting as the series progressed, however. I'd say that, standalone, the first one was fantastic.
