Yeah, Utsu. Although Ihrengott's posts are extremely hard to decipher, you DID misread him.

I've always compared the progress of The Pillows' fame too Foo Fighters. I always kinda felt like when you take away the music, in terms of popularity, they were similar. They both kinda fill in the same spots in each nation's music scene. They're always kinda there coming out with good stuff but never as popular as the fad bands.
I dont know if thats on topic, and I dont claim too be in-the-know of The Pillows' place in Japan's rock scene. but w/e. my 2 cents.

thanks Camio
Yeah, thats definitely on topic, but I hate to be like forceful and reprimand people for getting "off topic"
Threads are great cuz you can get off topic so easily and that lets people really get involved in ways they might not otherwise
I kinda started this thread cuz I really respect the pillows more than any other band out there right now.
I mean the Foo Fighters are great and all, but I don't respect them as much as The Pillows for a number of reasons that are hard to actually translate from my mind to 'paper'
However, I respect a lot of the core bands of the 90's and early 00's these days tho they are either trying too hard to innovate or aren't really developing in ways I feel the pillows have, tho Turn Back seems to be the only real odd piece in their collection they have otherwise remained in my opinion
"VERY NICE ROCK"
which is a great part of Rock 'n Roll
which I don't see much these days
which is missing from American Music
which is missing from American Culture
...
Hope I'm not off topic too much here
Over Amp isn't even a pillows original, if I remember right.
Yes it is. The words were written by Sawao and Mu-Mu and the music was written by Sawao and first recorded by the pillows, which makes it a pillows original.

I always thought Modest Mouse was the American pillows parrallel. Not because they sound similar or anything, but because Modest Mouse has always been an experimental band like the pillows, and Isaac's writting reminds me somewhat of Sawao's in that he writes whatever feels good to him.

Wrong. mu-mu- first recorded the song. Well, Oasis kind of reminds me of the pillows, but they're British.

Right, 2002. For some reason I was thinking Terminal Heavens Rock came out the same year xD
But even still, Sawao write most of the song, so I'm gonna pretend it's a pillows orignial.

I would HARDLY call the pillows "experimental".
95% of pillows songs fit into one of these formulas:
verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> SOLO -> bridge -> chorus
verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> SOLO -> pre-chorus -> chorus
verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> SOLO -> chorus
....with the occasional intro. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not holding this AGAINST the pillows. I don't think it's a bad thing. It's just that the Sawao is so fucking predictable when it comes to the basic structure of his songs. That works out for him, because he knows how to do it damn well, and just create amazingly catchy and pretty songs that work nicely.
But to call them "experimental" is just plain wrong, I think. They may have switched their sound up about...maybe 4 times, but there's nothing I'd classify as "experimental". Alright so there was a little electronic filler in Come On, Ghost, My Beautiful Sun (Irene), RAIN BRAIN, Biscuit Hammer, and TYMT had it's signature MIDI riff. But yeah, I don't think that's nearly enough to warrant the "experimental" tag.

You don't and that's great, but I do.
They've gone through jazz rock, something that resembles indie rock, and pop rock. And they will continue to change their sound for as long as they stay together. History tells us Sawao can't settle on anything for too long.
That to me makes them experimental regardless of how formulaic their songs are.
