Went to youtube, watched the first video I found:

and decided it sucked hardcore.

So if anyone has an example of their good music, send it my way.

Can't find too much of their older stuff on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp0Z9C6U7hk Styrofoam Plates from their.. third or so CD, The Photo Album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k4KFfbnUL8 this is from their second newest album, Transatlanticism.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDJoqS_CHqI <- This is nothing, I just found it while browsing though :P It's got that Ted Leo guy or whatever that some people on the forum were mentioning so I thought it'd be of interest to some.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROWqobuPv5s <- 405 from We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes.. their.. 2nd album? Maybe third.. I think 2nd.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CV4Xy1A5RY One of their hits from Transatlanticism. :P Sound of Settling.

Ugh, I wish I could've found a video with the song "Line of Best Fit", but oh well. Here's some good stuff. Give most of it a chance. If you don't like it, then eh, you don't.

Regina Spektor is also ftw, too. :P her new CD is good and all, but people annoy me with it, so if you're gonna listen to her, try and "obtain" 11:11 (because it's like.. out of print) and listen to Re-jazz, or get Soviet Kitsch.

Well, I just realized, I have this fansite thing and it has live songs for free :D her live stuff usually owns the actual record, because it's usually just her and her piano.

Indie can mean not being signed to a major record label, or it can embody an indie, DIY mentality and approach to music. Indie by itself is not a genre, but Indie Rock, Indie Pop, etc. are.

I thought the DIY mentality was more associated with punk than anything? Isn't that why anti-folk is considered punk+folk, because it's basically the rawest, most DIY movement in folk?

I didn't say it was exclusive to Indie. If Punk were the only genre that had a DIY approach, we wouldn't have music.

Well, unless someone else is making music for you, it seems this "DIY mentality" is ubiquitous.

seriously.

And don't forget fine folks like the decemberists and rufus wainwright! Though I must concede that like many here most of my music is from bands further in the past and/or Japan.

AND Indie is the name of the Jones' dog, last time I checked...

The producer, who records it? The guy who's in charge of mixing? The promotional people who are in charge of promoting the CD? There's a lot of people involved besides the artists, and I think part of the DIY mentality I'm talking about is the artists taking on some of the responsibility, or at least having a large degree of input, into those aspects of the recording of their music.

I see what you mean, and it makes a lot of sense. But I think that as long as you're not on a major label, you tend to retain a lot of this independence. I guess it's changed a lot since before the 90's, when bands still retained their creative control. I do see the trend, though, that modern independent labels are becoming more and more powerful.

Really, all I'm saying is that there's more to the term indie than simply whether or not a band is on a major label. I think a lot of people associate it with shitty emo bands and a pretentious scene, so are loath to use the term or try to belittle it.

Any of you guys ever heard Recover?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=RIOPeaMnmCg - My Only Cure

http://youtube.com/watch?v=kPWBwhBy0eo - Night of the Creeps

Unfortunately they didn't get too big, and they split up recently (I don't know if it's permanent, but I think it is.) but they're pretty damned good. Second show I went to (well REAL show). First being Sparta.
