Ignoring clouds trolling in an otherwise interesting thread.
I agree with what sheerheartattack said. There really aren't that many bands that not only were around as long as the pillows have been, but also underwent as much stylistic change. I find the fact that every album is different than the one before it rather appealing.

There are certain times that certain bands like Weezer or the Pixies might sound like the pillows but I personally dont like any other band that get compared to the pillows, I just dont get into their music. I think the pillows are pretty unique since their sound has changed a lot yet still has had the same stuff that makes it rock (or jazzy or whatever).
For me at least, the pillows' songs just never get old.

Same here. There's so much that I haven't ever gotten tired of any of their stuff. There's always songs that you haven't listened to closely for a while, and it's always a pleasant surprise to hear it and be reminded of how good it is.

 Obviously
We all love the pillows, some of us love them more than life, others love them for being Japanese, HOWEVER
the point of this thread was to kick back the fact that The Pillows are Japanese and thusly
AREN"T AMERICAN
but what if they were, what would they be like?
How can we as Americans get closer to that misunderstood life & style that is Eastern, Asian, & Japanese with things that are local, that we can relate to, and that we can understand from this continent.

Hurrah, first post.
So, I hear a lot of other bands within the pillows rather than the pillows in other bands. For instance "Back Seat Dog" reminds me of "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies (I didn't realize that Sawao was saying "Here comes your man" in the end of the song until about a year ago), and I can hear bands like Weezer, The Velvet Underground, or maybe The Bravery in oher songs. I know they are a British band, but i think that the pillows sound like Grandaddy too.
I think the real big issue with comparing a Japanese band with an English speaking band is that you don't readily recognize what he is saying. I know that it is really all about the sound with the pillows, but i think there is some kind of special allure that goes along with listening to another language. I speak a good deal of Japanese, and i get the gist of what he is saying, but there is still some kind of mysterious aspect of not knowing what's going on exactly.

The only factor that plays into is that you notice sound more than word.
When I do know what he is saying, I tend to love the songs even more, so it's not just the language barrier that gives the Pillows their greatness.

ok, never mind. I was just imagining things. Grandaddy doesn't sound too much like the pillows (except for maybe TYMT)
If you are looking for similar bands, you can go to Pandora.com and make a pillows station. I just got a good handful of bands like "Low" or "The New Pornographers"

LOL I started this thread
sure I many not have paid pure attn to the topic but I did have an unnameable feeling in mind when I started the thread,
so to try and focus the energy surrounding this thread further,
Why is it that at the very least the ability to focus more on the music of THE PILLOWS (due to the foreign language aspect as previously posted ... PROPS ) at the least makes them a better band than others with a marginally pervasive sound and marginally meaningful lyrics
