The thing is, songs like Bokura no Hare Suisei already sounded great the first time. Redoing that song didn't really do much at all for me, and I even prefer the original.
"Look back in time, and look at us now," can easily and more effectively be done by putting out a new, original album, no?
I'm not saying Turn Back was a waste, but it just never really had a point to me.

Slower songs that build up to a powerful chorus. Auxiliary instruments, if any, being played by real people and not replaced by lousy midi samples from a keyboard/sequencer. Although Scarecrow kinda confirms this is not going to happen. Another reggae song. I haven't heard them do a reggae song I didn't like.*
*The Nine Miles covers don't count. They were horrible.

Probably nine times out of ten, nobody will be able to hear the difference between a fake synth and a real orchestra. Just sayin', technology's gettin' way up there.

Agreed but what made albums of yesteryear so great is those fudged notes or cues you'd only happen to pick up when listening years later. Hell, people are still discussing odd notes or sounds heard in Beatles songs to this day. Digital recording is killing music. Cut and paste, pro tools logic is killing music. Sure it's more convenient than analog, but it makes everything sound perfect and music has always been the complete opposite. At the risk of sounding cliche; music is an extension of humanity and humanity is imperfect. IMHO, music is supposed to be spontaneous and dirty sounding. The only way to do an orchestral piece is with a real orchestra and run the risk of having that one sleep deprived violinist accidentally play a wrong note. It adds a unique quality that music today lacks.

One, only one Nine Miles cover.
Two, getting a real orchestra is rather expensive, and probably a choice determined by the record label as opposed to the band.

I generally agree to what you're saying, except not in such absolute terms. For instance, music isn't necessarily supposed to be dirty sounding. I'd wager some of the best orchestras can kick a synth's ass any day of the week.
Anyway, my real point was that for a band like Metallica or Deep Purple - enlisting an orchestra is feasible and worthwhile. However, if you're some quasi-popular rock band from Japan, a synth might be your only option. A lot of people might disagree, but I believe that you can maintain the artistic quality of music while using a synth. Most music in the 80's was built around the synth, and there was certainly no lack of talent, musicianship, or artistic merit. Will I respect a band who can sound great without a synth more? Yes, but that doesn't mean that using a synth will in turn be losing my respect. Far from it.
Remember, a synth still has to be played, and it does require talent. Come to think of it, it's no different than running your guitar through an effects loop. Okay, maybe a little different, but not by much.

Yep, very well said. The Pillows older stuff is great for just that reason, sawao's voice cracks in Ice Pick, which really fit into the song somehow.
If you don't think that non-ironed music sounds better, go listen to pantomime.

It's not really a crack, it's kind of a pop when he says "basho ga"

I think that would be a problem with your mp3, not the song.
edit: as in, i ripped mine right off the cd, and there's not "pop" or anything anywhere in the song. sounds like you have an mp3 that got a bit corrupted or something.
