I don't see where some of you are coming from with this "noise" thing. When I think noise I think of bands such as Melt Banana. Number Girl has always hit me as very traditional/oriental and melodic. I'm going to try to shy away from reading opinions because I'm really enjoying their stuff right now and don't care to have it soured.

The DVD from ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL (Lake Stage) that comes with OMOIDE IN MY HEAD 2 is absulutely incredible. This beats any Zazen Boys live, the pillows' 916, and almost The Back Horn's Bakuon Yumehanabi. Very moving performance.

To [Mr. Lostman]: Number Girl is not ready for you yet. Wait a couple years and maybe Mukai will open his door to you.

I downloaded Sappukei a few days ago and it's the only album that I've instantly liked. Everything else (except for the really catchy songs like Toumei Shoujo and Omoide in my Head) took me some time to warm up to.

Actually, School Girl Distortional Addict and Num-Heavymetallic were the only albums I had for long while until everyone here started hyping them so much. They've grown on me, but I don't think they're really too amazing. Zazen Boys on the other hand...

If it's from 2002 that file is all over slsk. Num-Ami-Dabutz, Tatoo Ari, I Don't Know, Iggy Pop Fan Club, Destruction Baby(DUB). Amazing.
AWPJudy you should check out "Sappukei". It has a good mix of noise and melody that's enjoyable for first listen.
If he hated num ami dabutz I don't think he'll like their other songs.

They are definetly one of those bands that you might skip over the first time you hear them, yet they are one of those bands where you can hear one song and fall in love.
Sometimes you just need some time to enjoy to it.

I thought I would post these even though most of you are going to say "ZOMG ALREADY SEEN THESE!"

Artist: Number Girl
Title: Num-Ami-Dabutz
Words: Mukai Shuutoku
Music: Mukai Shuutoku

Present day.
This goes out to the race of delusional humans living in the frozen city.
We're all piss drunk. Today was another 46degree semitransparent (day). *1
The Num-Ami-Dabutz I barked out based on the HAGAKURE theory *2
succeeds, a transient song to this celebrating world

I ignore the cold smile at the edge of sympathy
I have a need to raise my concentration to extreme extremes.
I have a need to stare at my newspaper when I eat.
I have no need to take midterm exams.
I have no need to undergo military training
I have no need to be influenced by the Red Army.
I have no need to sing about my peaceful self's peacefulness.

Plug your ears if you have a phobia of acute angles.
Because I'm an electric confusionist, and as I mutter
these words my alcohol-poison-eroded brain manipulates out,
I get all hollow and vague. *3

It was 6:30 PM when I started walking in the frozen city
Those guys and girls all over each other from the middle of the day,
What do they think they're doing with their fucking reproductive organs *4
Women being eye-raped *5 strewing self-consciousness all over the place
what a disgrace
But you put on airs as you wet your underwear
the heavens drop rain on you and the punks puff the ganja
Even so, that's life as the frozen city goes about its business as usual.

In the frozen city that's life
He disappears out of sight

Translator's Notes: First of all, "Num-Ami-Dabutz," or "Namu Ami Dabutsu"
in Japanese, is a Buddhist chant. So the lyrics in the song,
in my opinion, are like a modern-day chant.

* 1 - The 46 degrees is in Celsius (a.k.a. Centigrade. Smiles. -editor) I am not sure what he is referring to as being "semitransparent," but knowing that 38 degrees C is 100.4 degrees F, I can only assume that 46 degrees C would be about 110 degrees. But he does say "Kyou mo" (Again today), so it leads me to believe he is talking about the weather, the heat, and the smog over Tokyo being semitransparent.

* 2 - Hagakure is a word that often comes up in Number Girl
songs. This was an 11-volume text written around 1716 about
Bushido warriors, citing the Bushido (way of the warrior/samurai)
values and virtues through criticizing/evaluating the words and
actions of Bushido.

* 3 - This stanza is a warning to anyone with a "phobia for acute angles," saying that he has been talking a little nonsense, with slang for "utsutte aimatte ita." The kanji for "utsutte" is "utsuro" (‹•‚ë), and aimatte is in hiragana, so I took "utsutte" as his made-up word for being empty or hollow, and aimatte as "aimai" (vague) turned into a verb.

* 4 - The Japanese for this part, "...seishoku kikan ha mou ii kagen doukoumo naran" shows his frustration at the acts of the young people hanging all over each other out in the open in the middle of the day, the kind that make you want to scream "get a room!" And this is even more frowned upon in Japan than in America.

* 5 - Eye Rape - This is when men oogle and leer at women, or just look normally at them, imagining sexual acts, or as one website puts it, literally "rape with ones eyes," on a train or on the street, for example.

Artist: Number Girl
Title: Cibicco-san (Little Kiddie)
Words: Mukai Shuutoku
Music: Mukai Shuutoku

Hey little kiddie Whatcha doin' there, huh?
Hey little kiddie Whatcha wanna do, huh?
Hey little kiddie What's so funny
Hey little kiddie Why ya laughing, eh?

Hey mister fisherman Whatcha catchin' there, huh?
Hey mister fisherman You're just sittin' still, huh
Hey mister robber Whatcha tryin' to do, eh?
Hey mister robber You sure you doin' okay there?

A bunch of little brats playing In this tiny little park
How they supposed to play baseball In this tiny little innercity park
With the setting sun shining down that looks like it might be kinda fun

Hey there, young miss, taking your big dog for a walk there
That huge mouth just waiting to munch down on
that manjuu you have in your hand
I lose sight of it as I slowly reach the top of the hill.

thanks to Centigrade-J for these translations.

It's definitely something that grows on you with time. Plus that's not one of their most accessible songs.

Oh yeah, and they are better live that on most albums...

Try Num-Ami-Dabutz or Num-Heavymetallic if you want something traditional, catchy, and genious.

I knew that was coming.

Let's please stop with this superiorityididitfirst thing. I'm not just pointing at you either...hell, I've done it myself.

It all started with Culen's pre-Runner's High bashing and now it has spread to basically every aspect of each individual post and it is not benefiting any one of us.

Why don't we point out the positives in music rather than dwell on the negatives?

And is there anything wrong with sharing a little info with you guys? I know for a fact someone will stumble upon this thread and be thankful for these lyrics. You or anyone else that has already read them can just skip over or post a friendly comment. Jeebus.

We have so much in common and we are all passionate about our music; Can't we all get along?
