I'm just gonna mention a few more for kicks:

Polysics (if you have an interest in new wave at all)

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant and/or Guitar Wolf (if you have an interest in garage rock at all)

Fujifabric (if you have an interest in "indie" music at all)

The Emeralds

The Back Horn (if you have an interest in emo that is actually good)

Acidman

I'm done. I would recommend more, but most of them have been mentioned already and/or are probably not worth your time since you don't want punk.

I'll definitely second the band apart and Fujifabric. Based on your criteria, I doubt you'd be disappointed with either band.

Since your on a Mac, try this: http://chris.schleifer.net/ssX/

It has a lot more functionality than SolarSeek.
From what I've heard, Nino Trinca seems appealing. Plus, they have Kashima.
Nino Trinca's a yes. They have a poppy jazz sound that's great to listen to (and yes, Kashima does not fail to deliver his bass skillz.) Check out their website for the song "Darling" on their intro flash.

EDIT: LOL to Last Dinosaur who listed Number Girl twice

Sparta Locals fit your criteria, I think. Does GO!GO!7188 not? I really like them, too.

I never though of Number Girl in that way. I knew the influences, but damn. I just see them as mild mannered people with an insane side. Which is why I love them.

And yeah, check out Number Girl's offspring bands. All of them. (For the record, Bloodthirsty Butchers have been around for a while. They had collaborated with NG on several occasions, and after the fall of NG, Tabuchi joined with them.)
Bloodthirsty Butchers have been around for over 20 years.

And yeah. Sambomaster fuckin' rocks. Best album, hands down:

Sambomaster wa kimi ni katarikakeru". It's their second latest, if I recall correctly.

Sambomaster = Joy cranked to 11.

I especially recommend Vola & The Oriental Machine. It's just something different from what you usually hear. Other bands you MIGHT enjoy:

Supercar
Syrup16g
Analogfish
Luminous Orange (Inazawa drums for them from time to time so i definitely recommend these guys)
and if you haven't yet, definitely check out Chewinggum Weekend. I seriously guarauntee you'll love what you hear.
