I found it that it's better to introduce their mediocre albums and some slight pre-2000 tracks to get people interested. Eventually, people would work their way down to their earlier stuff. That's how it was for me. :o

Post Re: Just who the hell are the pillows?!?
It's physically impossible for me to pick fifteen career defining songs. A true greatest hits for the pillows would span at least two, full capacity discs.
this si true. i actually did that for a friend of mine who was just getting into the pillows about a month back, and wanted to show him stuff past FLCL and penalty life. here's a condensed list of the songs i had on that:

1. Bokura no HAREE Suesei
2. Kono Yo No Hate Made
3. Walkin' On the Spiral
4. Carnival
5. No Self Control
6. Thank You My Twilight
7. Strange Chameleon
8. No Substance
9. Ride on shooting star
10. Monster C.C/ Shiroi Natsu...
11. Crazy Sunshine
12. Freebee Honey
13. Trip Dancer
14. The Third Eye
15. Nowhere

i think starting off with bokura no haree suesei is a good idea because it's a very powerful song. and carnival at #4 jsut always seems right, no matter what. no substance goes on there because it is a truly underrated song. i think a lot of american fans would love to hear it. monster c.c. or shiroi natsu work because they are both a bit slower and both are great songs overall which is why it's so ahrd to choose just one to put on. crazy sunshin and freebee honey get a spot because they are really upbeat and for lack of a better term are pretty rocking
and the perfect end to the compilation would be nowhere 8)

1. New Year's Eve
2. Suicide Diving
3. Instant Music
4. Rush
5. Skeleton Liar
6. Nowhere
7. Bran-new Love Song
8. Subhuman

And I really think that's all it takes. Don't want to show someone too much right off the bat.

I honestly think that Happy Bivouac is the best intro for people to get into the pillows.

For some reason quite a few people get into that more easily than PML.

My friend actually loved PML. That was the first album I had him hear (this is the Godot guy). He's gonna see if it's possible to combine the album and the play.

Okay, it took me a while to come up with this list (because I wanted the songs to flow nicely into one another). Anyway, I'm happy with how it turned out. It'll look funny at first, but try putting it into your playlist. I think it would be a good hook, line, and sinker for someone just getting into the pillows.

(In order)

1. Instant Music
2. Crazy Sunshine
3. Sleepy Head (album, duh)
4. One Life (preferably Fool on the Planet version.)
5. Plastic Flower (provides a nice slow down, if you get past the fuzz.)
6. Bokura no HARE Suisei/Our Halley's Comet (Works really well with PF)
7. Nowhere
8. Rock'n'Roll Sinners
9. Sayounara Unibasu/So Long, Universe
10. Girlfriend (It actually sounds all right after Sayounara Unibasu)
11. Borderline Case (Only one I'm kinda iffy about being on the list)
12. Please Mr. Lostman
13. Ritalin 202
14. ROBOTMAN
15. To top it all off -- Biscuit Hammer (or Beautiful Picture if you want, I like Biscuit Hammer following Robotman better though.)

Just looking at these songs listed like this, it looks REALLY weird and awkward, I know. It's a bit FLCL-heavy at the beginning, but it evens out with PF and Our Halley's Comet. The only real issue I had was trying to find a song that could flow from girlfriend and into Please Mr. Lostman. If you listen to all of Borderline Case, it works fine, but if you skip it somewhere in the song and go to the next track, it doesn't.

Playing the list backwards works too (just start with Instant Music again). The only part that's kinda iffy on that is when you hit Our Halley's Comet and go straight into Plastic Flower. It works a lot better when I listened to Onelife => Plastic Flower => Our Halley's Comet.

Well, that's all Folks! xD

Well I if I had to make a tracklist to introduce somebody into teh pillows without much FLCL in it would look like this:

1) Happy Bivouac
2) No Self Control
3) Sono Mirai wa Ima
4) Please Mr. Lostman
5) Babalyon Verses of Angels
6) Vain Dog
7) Terminal Heavens Rock
8) Rush
9) Frontiers
10) The Third Eye
11) Trip Dancer
12) Daydream Wonder
13) Beautiful Picture
14) Thank You, My Twilight
15) Gazelle City

Although I didn't add much of their older work I think I newbie to the pillows would easily get into this band with this set list or any other set list for that matter!

Yeah. HB seems more "accessible". Personally, I think PML is just as great if not a bit better, but...it just really comes down to how much effort people are going to put into paying attention to a song.

Of course I/we may love them equally, but thats because we know how awesome the pillows are. The person you're introducing the pillows to, however, will most likely just look for a catchy beat or riff, and maybe if the song's upbeat.

HB seems more clear and simple while PML's songs are more...complex and deep, it seems. More..."epic".

So yeah, HB takes it. For the same reason when I make a pillows mix tape, the song My Foot has a good chance of being track #1. Good drums. Good bass. Clean guitar.

I actually made a mix and I played it once when I was driving to the movies with a few friends. And it got all of them into the Pillows. One even got Happy Bivouac a month later. Here were the order of the tracks on my mix.

1. Thank you my Twilight (when this one started my friend Alex said, "Dude! Don't turn into Mikey." because our friend Mikey played video game music and he thought the begining part sounded nintendo like for some reason.
2. sono mirai wa ima
3. Little Busters
4. like a lovesong (back to back)
5. Babiron Tenshi no shi
6. Hybrid Rainbow
7. Another Morning
8. Runners High
9. Instant Music
10. Borderline case
11.Biscuit Hammer
12. Last Dinosaur
13. My Girl (Document version)
14. Ride on Shooting Star
15. Bran-new lovesong

16. sutorenji kamereon (original story)
17. Vain Dog (in rain drop)
18. She is Perfect
19. Nightmare
20. Nonfiction
21. White Summer and Green Bicycle, Red Hair and Black Guitar
