The religious symbolism doesn't really mean anything. Otherwise, yeah.

Yeah, I believe Anno or someone else pointed out that all the Christianity stuff is really just a plot device. I've always enjoyed Evangelion more for the depth of the characters rather than the storyline.

Agreed, on all fronts. In the midst of tons of mecha shows out in Japan, a series really needed to stand out from the rest to become even remotely popular. Evangelion used religious symbolism both as a plot device and as a way of getting attention and making it seem "cool".

I wouldn't agree with the statement that the use of religious themes and references is worthless. Sure Eva isn't a series about religion, and it doesn't seem to make any comments about religion. Again, the ideas and concepts were tweaked a little bit to be used as plot devices for a very unique series.

Wow, that was just about the most vague thing ever. I guess it's just something you have to watch to "get".

One interesting little tid bit about Eva:

Remember the scene in the first episode of Eva during the battle between Unit 01 and and the Angel? Unit 01's left eye gets completely destroyed -- the significance that it's the left eye is important here. Anno drew a lot of references from Christianity and the Kabbalah (in this case): In the Kabbalah (I remember hearing this in the directors' commentary of an Eva DVD), your left arm is the Arm of Shields. It's the connection to your past, your lineage, and your defense. The right arm signifies the Arm of Swords, your future, the ability to carve out your own destiny, and your form of attack. The destruction of the Eva's left eye then symbolic of the fact that Shinji's past life has been completely obliterrated. He must face his father and be an Eva pilot at Nerv - only his right eye, his destiny, remains.

That was a pretty terrible explanation of it, but that's just one of the little gems that Anno threw into Evangelion.

Ok yeah, I put that the wrong way. Some of the symbols have intended meanings, but they don't, in most cases, mean the things that we associate with them. For example, the cross-shaped blasts don't really have anything to do with Christianity.

^^exactly.

On a completely different subject...Naruto. Does anyone here watch it? I don't, but I need to help a friend out here. Apparently, Naruto has a catch-phrase, "Believe it!" and my friend really wants to know how it looks in Japanese. Could any of you type this out in Japanese? It'd be a huge help. Thanks

That catchphrase is really annoying. I don't like the anime nearly as much as the manga, but I have to admit that I really like the manga.

If you know what the Japanese words are (in romaji, that is), then yeah. Otherwise, I don't know the show at all and have no idea what that phrase would be in Japanese.

Of course, someone else will beat me to it.

i don't think that's a literal translation... as far as i know (i don't watch it), the characters in that show have trademark semi-gibberish phrases and i'm guessing this is what you're talking about.

just promise me your friend will never try to use that in conversation. :/

i'm happy to hear that you liked paranoia, since i downloaded it but then classes started and i suddenly have no free time to watch it...

in any case... goodgoodgood, i look forward to watching it.

oh and everyone, read or die was surprisingly good. genshinken and honey and clover both sucked. fullmetal alchemist is entirely overrated. DISCUSS (or not).

I loved Fullmetal Alchemist. It just sorta died out for me because it's over and the fandom around it is horrible. I laugh at those who still watch it.

It's all about Fate/Stay Night on /a/ nowadays.
