Actually the PS2 did have problems at its release. They weren't as frequent as the Xbox's, so its understandable that your's worked fine; my friend's console had a hard time reading some disks (even if the game was new out of the box), and didn't work with the official Sony multitap.

Nintendo quality was always superior, I got an n64 a short after the release and I never had any problem, while every psx owner I knew had to do some repairing after a year or two.

My xbox works like shit, and i've taken the best possible care of it. My n64, SNES, and gamecube haven't let me down once.

Sega systems seem to have long lifespans, as well. I have an 11 year old Genesis which works perfectly. My cousin has a ton of Sega systems and attachments (Genesis, Saturn, CD, 32X, Dreamcast, Nomad, GameGear... Is that all of them?) and they're all fine, as well.
Aw.. Sega.

dreamcast is the only non nintendo console i've invested in.
and as for nintendo being like apple, i don't agree as far as prices go.

My N64 < My PS2
My N64 ended up costing me $100 in repairs.

Depends if you're lucky.
I have some friends and one is on his 3rd PS2 while another one's shuts off automatically every 10 mins.
