MY FOOT is MY GOD...

-Freakn My Foot blew me away right away.

-Mighty lovers, March of the God, and Sayonara Unibasu were all good and well produced (good job manabe)

-Gazelle City... Sexy english, I even like that part where sawao tweets with the guitar.

-the third eye and non-fiction, good as always.

-My Girl (document version) sweet emo lovin'.

- Rock n' Roll sinners kind of bothered me but I listen to it again and its ok.

- Sky register sounded like a filler, not bad though.

OVER ALL: HELL OF A COME BACK

I have to disagree with what most people are saying. Saying that it's one of their top 4 albums of all time is just stupid. To me, this album is at most, 2 steps above Good Dreams. I would even go as far as to say that it's the best they've done since TYMT. Comparing it to Happy Bivouac is like comparing Living Field to Penalty Life. I'd have to say that there are some songs that are meh and some that are good. But in no way does this album mean that they are going back to golden age of 1995 to 2002.

March of the God made me want to play Katamari Damacy for some reason.

I think we were saying it was the best SINCE Happy Bivuoac. As in...HB -> My Foot -> TMYT -> etc.

Whether it's better than TMYT is still up for debate with me. They both really survive solely on a few standout tracks-

For me, TMYT has ROBOTMAN, Biscuit Hammer, Shiroi, and Thank You, My Twilight.

My Foot...well, lets get into that right now, with my mini review:

My Foot: Much better than I thought it was going to be. Nice to see Jun intro-ing it up...it's a very melodic piece all around, loved Sawao's voice during the chorus.

Rock'n'Roll Sinners: Fun Engrish, yeah a bit cheesy. Nothing fantastic, but not terrible either. Stands at the lower end with me.

Kuuchuu Register: Ehhh...My least favorite. Didn't seem like they were trying too hard on this one - filler. Nice solo though.

Third Eye/Nonfiction: They were great singles, but Third Eye's sharp, repetitive riff just makes it sound sort of out of place in the album. It's weird...still a great song though.

Mighty Lovers: Well...I didn't really like the actual singing bits, but I loved how Sawao and Manabe really play off each other's riffs...more of that in Gazelle City... :)

Degeneration: A bit too much like Heavy Sun, but it maintains its originality. Plus "Degenerate! Degeneration! I will!" wins, along with the kickass solo.

March of the God: I don't really see what you guys see in this one. I like it, sure, but this over Thunder Whales and Paper Triangle? PAPER TRIANGLE? Meh, it'll take a bit longer for me to get into this one - still great though.

My Girl (Document Version): The opening verses really messed me up. Sounded just like a basic sped-up My Girl, sounded like a cheap out. But then the chorus kicked in, and I came. I really like what they did with it.

Sayonara Universe: Second Favorite. Sounds kinda like a sadder O-tsuki-sama. I need to see this live, ASAP. Why? Open up your iTunes, and slide on over to 3:38. You know Manabe kicks ass.

Gazelle City: The first time I played this song, my spine and the back of my skull started tingling for about 7 seconds, I kid you not. This song is completely amazing on so many levels. Again, Sawao and Manabe's exchanges are priceless. Sawao's English sounds so laid back and earnest. And the chorus? Excellence. Sawao's outro tweeting is also pure bliss...just one thing: Why are all the best songs the shortest? 2:56? What gives?

OVERALL: I really liked this album - definitely a step up from Good Dreams (although I don't think GD was that terrible to start with). It's certainly has a few average songs, ie: Kuuchuu Register, Rock 'n' Roll Sinners, and Degeneration, to a certain extent. While this is a step in the right direction for the pillows, I really think its time to give up hope on them going back to their glory days, of the HB, LB, RH trilogy. Their style is obviously more easy going now, focusing on what they do best: catchy riffs, and melodic choruses.

So while we probably won't see another Strange Chameleon, Kanojo wa Kyou, or Swanky Street anytime in the forseeable future, I'll be just fine with Gazelle City, thank you very much.

I think it's okay. I'll have to listen to it more than once to pick out what I like and what I don't. Best since TYMT? I dunno. Maybe.

Right off the bat I heard some similarities between the title track and Sick Vibration, a song which I love. So that's something I suppose.

I feel pretty ambivalent about it right now. As far as comparing it to Happy Bivouac or Thank You, My Twilight, it can't compare.

Not even on the same level.

Sure, Good Dreams wasn't bad. This is a step above that album. And certainly miles ahead of Penalty Life.

Ok, so now I have a song-by-song minireview to impart upon y'all.

My Foot- I like this song. I like the bassline, I like the melody and I like how it starts the album off. Also, solo = good, but the chorus is what won me over. Also, I request the lyrics from this.

Rock'n'roll Sinners- I don't like it. It's really way cheesy and nothing really meshes with the rest of the album.

Sky Register- No, it's good, it's just short and weird. Actually, the first four songs of this album make for one of the most disjointed intros to an album ever.

The Third Eye- Still good, just out of place.

Mighty Lovers- I like it A LOT. Everything is quirky and totally different from anything else they've ever done. Which is a good thing. Chorus feels a little off though.

Nonfiction- Still good. Probably my favourite still. Gotta love that chorus.

Degeneration- It's good, just a little "RAWK" for my tastes.

March of the God- Killer instrumental. Love the playback between Sawao and Manabe. Shin slays his drums.

My Girl (Document Version)- I FUCKING TOLD YOU GUYS MY GIRL WOULD KICK ASS. I WAS RIGHT.

Sayonara Universe- the pillows win. This is a great climactic song. I would have been happy with them ending the album like this but instead...

Gazelle City- Finishes the album off perfectly. I really like this song. No, really, it's the perfect ending to My Foot.

Now someone translate the lyrics and tab March of the God please.

Meh. Worse than Penalty Life. Sounds like they outsourced the actual music and just had Sawao dub some shit on it. I mean damn, is Degeneration really a Pillows song? It pains me. March of the God is also especially lame. It sounds like AKG. I said that about Wakare no Uta, too. I just didn't realize I was being prophetic. Oh, and to avoid confusion among the less astute; I do not like AKG.

I join the review club:
My Foot: Alright.
Rock'n'Roll Sinners: Sucks.
Kuuchuu Rejista: Sucks.
The Third Eye: Good.
Mighty Lovers: Sounds like Scoobie Do in a way. So it's cool. Chorus is bad.
Nonfiction: S'coo'.
Degeneration: Sounds like a Predators song that was unanimously rejected from even making it as a b-side. (Worst Pillows song? No...)
March of the God: Crap. (This is)
My Girl (Whatever Version): Sucks.
Sayonara Universe: Sucks.
Gazelle City: Good.

These are all based on initial listenings, but I do believe this is my least favorite Pillows album. I was probably one of the more optimistic among us, too, after hearing Nonfiction and The Third Eye.

I'd say that this album reaches all new levels of cheese. And unlike other albums where it's only a few tracks that suffer from it, this one is pretty much soaked through in it.

One and a half thumbs down (I cut it off while listening to Degeneration/March of the God).

Listened to Mighty Lovers again, now I see what you guys are saying. It's a pretty frickin' sweet song. But yeah, the chorus needs a little work.

Oh, and as for being better than TMYT?

Hard to say.

TMYT was pretty unbalanced in my opinion. It does have a few of my all-time favorite pillows tracks, but Irene, Rain Brain, Come on Ghost, Ritalin 202, and even Babylon Verses of Angel aren't really that amazing too my.

My Foot seems more balanced to me. More "Hey, that's pretty good"s than just a few "Oh my god best song ever"s.

Both great albums, and I'm not really sure I can compare the two, now that I think about it.
