Maybe Manabe doesn't want to sing backup.
Manabe as back up works really well some cases. In the Another Morning performance in the 916 concert, the last parts:
"Happy...Re-birthday, yeah. Oh yeah........Oh yeah......"
Sawao of course, sings that on-key. Manabe is a bit off. He sounds a little bit higher. What results from that is a smooth buttery mix of pillows vocals that can't be beat.
doesnt manabe sing high harmony to sawao's voice? i can always be wrong but thats what i always thought

Highly possible. Manabe's singing has always come off as being a touch "off"* to me, but he could just be doing some high harmony.
*Listen to the BOTP Advice. "You're good for nothing also a mocker" sounds so incredibly bad. But cute. Meaning, good.

I think manabe's backups have always been good, and tasteful. Listen to the backup vocals used in parii no josei marii. Even if they are a bit off, its sweet when they play it in the 916 dvd and manabe get's going.

That seems to be at "CAN YOU FEEL that Hybrid Rainbow". Doesnt seem like a mess up to me. Just a slightly wavering scream (suited to a live performance).

I believe everything Replica says.

I just saw the pv finally. I wasnt sure where the song was going at first but then it took off with me. Different it was, but cool. Very unique sounding, just like non fiction. I think if all the songs on the new album are as diverse as these two we will be in for something special.

Well, I just saw it.
At first my initial reaction was kind of, "Meh." But when they broke into the chorus, I fell in love with it, such a nice, high-energy song. Seems like a more energized style than what was on Good Dreams, too. Which is good.

I think Manabe sings a bit lower than Sawao. His voice is deeper and not as strong, so I think Sawao's overpowers it a lot. You can hear him singing better on their live stuff.
