I'm a huge fan of Ken Akamatsu; and I just read vol. 1-5 of Negima. Although not up to par with Love Hina or A.I. Love You , it's still wicked funny. Although it has a different type of fantasy fiction that's not of the previous two. That being said: Negima the anime, please!

no...but it's fun to read manga in japanese, since i can work up my reading speed that way (my speed at reading japanese). and no translation ever has the original effect. i can't read azumanga in english after reading the first one in japanese. and i couldn't even read all the kanji without looking them up.

If you are reading them to increase your speed at reading japanese, say so. And don't act like they're somehow so much better than their english counterparts.
Your Japanese fetish is really annoying, as well, fyi.

?
that was dumb.
i like reading them in japanese because a-i like japanese, and am learning it. so it's a fun way to practice reading it and to learn kanji, and b-it actually IS funnier/better/cooler in the japanese when i understand it. this may be simply because of my "japanese fetish" (as you put it) or because THINGS ARE ALWAYS BETTER IN THEIR ORIGINAL LANGUAGE. UNLESS THE TRANSLATOR IS A GOD.

This hatred of dubs and translations is really stupid and outdated. Sure, when anime and other things were just starting to be imported, their dub counterparts suffered from lame voice actors and poorly matched audio tracks. However, this complaint is much less relevant now that people actually take the time to do accurate translations that not only convey the meaning of the original work, but make sense to American audiences.
This is especially true for manga, since matching visual and audio tracks is not an issue. Unless something is intentionally altered for some reason (censorship etc.), there shouldn't be any real difference, except in your mind.

A lot anime and manga isn't very well written in the first place. Reading War and Peace in Russian I can understand, but Love Hina isn't exactly Shakespeare.

i don't hate dubs, and i don't think that all anime/manga are good in the first place. however, as a person who is enjoying learning the language, i prefer it in the original. and as for dubs, even thought they are a LOT better now, you still can't convey all of the original script all the time. you lose some things. the humor is just funnier to me in japanese, especially when they use totally random english. it's just a preference.
again on the note of dubs, thank goodness the voice actors are getting better, but there are still a lot more crappy ones than good ones. but it is improving, like you said.

Funny, you should mention Russian. I've always hated the way it translates into English as well. It always comes of as awkwardly sterile and terse or just annoyingly long-winded. I guess the literary conventions of Russia are partly to blame.
It's not like I have any desire to learn the language, but the translations can make for a rather turgid read.

regardless of anyone's opinions on dubs and translations, absorbing entertaining source material in its original tongue is a great way to help learn another language. i've had friends who immigrated to the US who bolstered their english via video games (rpgs) and cartoons. :P not that they had that much choice about learning, but i'm sure that was more fun than reading textbooks.
