Ging Nang Boyz
What is this crap? I downloaded two albums expecting the music to be atleast half worthy of the praise I hear and what I got was a musical abortion. Throat cancer comes to mind for some reason. The one decent song I heard was Hyouryu Kyoushitsu.
I guess I'm just not punk.

I wasn't too thrilled with them either. I stopped listening when they broke out the harmonica. Somehow they managed to ruin the unbeatable combo of punk+harmonica.
There's plenty of good Japanese punk, why everyone is hyping these tin-eared psychos is beyond me.

I downloaded "You and I vs. the world" (can remember the japanese title, oh well..), and I thought it was only alright, nothing mind-blowing like some people seem to think.

I remember Eastern Youth had a few good songs. I liked Sajin no Kanatae (To the Sandstorm). Sounded like pretty good punk to me, although I'm not very good with genres.

I really love the GNB version of that song. Anyway, if the Nang Boyz are too manic for your tastes, try Going Steady.

It's not a matter of how manic they are, it's a matter of how shitty they sound. I don't care if they aren't technical pros, but for christ sake.
Nante Akui ni Michita Taheiwa Nan Darou: right about 2:30.

Who originally sang that song? And yes, Going Steady is awesome. "Stand by Me" is one of my favorite songs ever.

I prefer their less in your face stuff to their fast stuff.
Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru, Nantonaku Bokutachi ha Otona ni Narunda, Ningen, Wakuseikichi Beourufu, Yoru Ouji to Tsuki no Hime, Yume de Aetara, Hyouryu Kyoushitsu, and Seishun Jidai.
Skool kill is a favorite though.

I like the first wave of Japanese punk. All of the bands who were part of the "Tokyo Rockers" scene as well as bands like The Stalin can be pretty cool. From what I've heard I'm not that big on Ging Nang Boyz, but I haven't really heard enough to judge. As far as Japanese punk albums go, it's pretty hard to go wrong with Melt Banana's Cell Scape. Their older stuff is not very interesting by-the-books hardcore, but that album is actually pretty good. The song "If It Is The Deep Sea, I Can See You There" turns into sort of noisy, arrhythmic pop and it's awesome. The album is pretty uneven, but the good spots make up for the bad ones.
EDIT: How could I have forgotten Guitar Wolf? I am a terrible person.
