I just got a chance to listen to some of The Preditors stuff. Ive been on message board hiatus for a while, but its interesting to me that a thread about the Preditors has taken over the pillows section, shouldnt this be moved to music? Maybe not... I dont know.

As for everyone with there defend this/defend that, flame this/flame that attitude. They are all just opinions and we all know what an opinion is. It’s a culmination of collective thoughts assumed by the influence of experiences that we have all encountered. In other words it is like an asshole. We all have them and they all stink :p. j/k

GENRES:
One band can fall under many Genres. Genres were created to generalize a style of music so you can have an idea of what you are about to listen to which, in my “opinion” is a bunch bullshit. Every year a genre is split into many more categories to better classify that style of music which is in a way de-generalizing it. What ever happened to just “experiencing” the music without expectations? All a genre does is create an expectation for the music that you are about to listen too. Why? What I hate more than anything in the world is when I introduce someone to a new band (like the pillows) and the first question I get is. What genre are they? I always answer that question with a question. Why would you want to limit your experience by creating boundaries before you have a chance to enjoy something new? This is a genre you have never heard before. It’s a genre called “The Pillows”. Think about it. It we keep de-generalizing genres into sub-categories wouldn’t every band eventually have there own genre? Hence a band name.

Okay have a field day flaming me for my retarded post. I need something to read here at work.

Why is this board so afraid of opinions? Every time someone has something to say everyone goes "well, everybody has an opinion, blah, blah, blah".

I don't think opinions are worth shit if you’re not willing to defend or explain them. Sure, maybe the predators aren't the most important thing in the world, and ultimately all the babbling we've been doing is just a way to kill time, but what’s wrong with having an opinion about a musical group? Just because everybody has them doesn't mean we all shouldn’t express ours.

As for genres, I think people need to get off their high horses. Humans have developed this wonderful technique to label and communicate the abstract. It's called language. There are so many different types of music, why shouldn't we have a specific way to sort them all out. Putting a name on it doesn't cheapen the music. Listening to it on crappy speakers does. In fact I think lumping all music together in broad genres cheapens it. There are so many artists doing unique and different things. Don't you think their styles deserve to be recognized and defined?

Otis Redding sings southern soul.

Did that make his music worse somehow?

I agree with Catfish entirely.
Let's put the predators in their own genre then...
Oh, I could, but it would be cruel.

WE CAN'T STOP HERE, THIS IS BAT COUNTRY.

Catfish seems to be the voice of reason in this little bout. I expect Bushi to ban him by the end of the day.

Certain cajun people don't allow opinions on this thread.

I don't see why people are making a big fuss about others saying they suck.

Do you realize that you are the only one who is still complaining about that? The debate that is going on in this thread has nothing to do with the fact that I was trying to keep this topic on track several weeks ago.
Stop whining already. If you still want to cry and complain about it PM me instead of filling this thread with your sorrow.

I really don't have anything to add to this debate other than saying that some people are going to be touchy if you post anything negative about anything pillows related here. That's just how it is, and that's why I like to encourage people to back themselves up when posting stuff along the lines of "The Predators suck".

Anyway, the album comes out in only a few days. I am still looking very forward to it, as I have mentioned liking the three songs that I have heard.

don't shoot. I'm just a messenger
The Predators' music is void of any merit. It doesn't further anything. It's the same tired, worn-out lyrical and musical formula Sawao has been pushing on us, like a shady drug dealer in some dark alley, for a little over two years now. Jiro's playing style and overall sound doesn't add a unique flavor to the trio and Sawao doesn't even try in the least to change the production methods that alter his recording voice in the final product. Shinpei's drumming style (one of inexperience) is really the only thing that presents anything new to you or I, a fan of the pillows. But I was happier than Hell when he, Shinpei, was apart of only one other pop rock trio with a much more talented and tone-savvy bassist, and a younger guitarist/vocalist with fresh ideas. They're called Straightener.

To add insult to injury, the only real reasons given so far in this thread as to why anybody should care in the least about The Predators and their music is (le sigh) crotch shots in promotional videos, the fact Sawao is heading the group, and what appears to be blind ignorance to the fact that they're The Pillows' next album in a smaller, three-piece package. The latter due to the lack of a lead guitarist paired with Jiro's boring, bassy root note downpicking akin to Jun Suzuki at his worst and Sawao's annoying echoed studio FX voice, essentially turning what could have been a perfect oppurtunity to unload new, original ideas on their respective audiences, much like what Sawao did with Spiky Brothers or his short solo stint, into mere Pillows b-sides.

To summarize, The Predators, in concept and execution is nothing but an over-produced, simple, and childish concept. A quick cash grab for Sawao Yamanaka, an aging rocker trying to make it back into the mainstream limelight one last time by teaming up with two willing young guns apart of bands that are topping the charts and either heading huge tours (GLAY) or opening up for them (Straightener) with much of the success the headlining band enjoys. If you people were too blind to notice, Synchronized Rockers was much of the same and that's why I was quick to denounce the bigger names involved and applaud the older, niche bands that the mainstream has largely forgotten. If you were too excited to notice during the time between the album's announcement and its eventual release, the music industry paired The Pillows, a rather unpopular pop rock band that sang about depressing stuff and associated them with chart toppers like Mr. Children, Bump of Chicken, and Ellegarden to (obviously) perk the interest of the target demographic that listen to these bands. Sure these bands may actually draw influence from The Pillows and were more than glad to cover on of their songs, but beyond this, Synchronized Rockers was nothing more than a dirty marketing ploy. Why would Sawao and co. complain, though? It brought in the money, as shrewd as it all was. It's the same case with The Predators and it just tears me up inside to see all of you people supporting it.

I almost always agree with Culen to a certain extent. I think his critique of the music is accurate. However, I personally wouldn't be so quick to make conjectures about the reasonings behind various pillows-related projects. He may very well be right, but I wouldn't jump to those conclusions myself.

For someone who could give a shit for aging Sawao or anything he's done since Little Buster's, Culen sure as hell but a lot of words in to that "review". You would think he'd have better things to do. Apparently not.
