You ever catch yourself in any of those live DVDs, Mafu?

Yeah, I'm visible a few times in the 25th anniversary "Don't forget today" DVD. Pretty sure I can't be seen in Stroll and Roll Band, since they barely show the second floor. It's a bit embarrassing to be seen on the DVDs, though.

Speaking of DVDs, if you could only watch three of 'em, which would you go with? Let's exclude box sets and count each disc on stuff like the Movement DVDs separately.

Gotta go with Busters on the Planet, 2nd Movement, and Stroll and Roll Band...but I bet the DVD for Nook is gonna bump Stroll off my list. :shred:

hmm my picks would have to be Don't Forget Today, 2nd Movement and Lostman Go to Budokan. Parts of OOParts and Moondust Light for You trail very closely behind those three, imo.

Ooh, a cluster of more recent ones for you, huh? I think that overall their live performance continues to improve each year, so I can get behind that. Wish every tour reached back into the catalog like the Lostman Go to Yesterday one did, but the new album songs already take up about half the set and there's a billion songs to choose from.

Parts of Ooparts did a pretty slick job of matching mid-career songs to the flow of the album tracks, for sure.

Although my favourite DVDs are obviously the retrospective ones, I'm glad the band isn't resting on their golden-era material and are fully and rightfully embracing their newer stuff. I do like it when they "reach back" into their catalog, but at this point, with 15th, 20th and 25th anniversary DVDs featuring setlists that drew heavily from pre-2000s Pillows songs, I'm more keen on them "reaching back" into their late-King and Avex work to supplement the album tracks on recent setlists. Which I think they actually have been doing; I made a post a couple of pages back about how recent shows have been drawing from Thank You, My Twilight and Good Dreams, which is cool.

I think your point about the matching of old cuts with album tracks on Parts of OOParts actually extends to most of the band's recent album tour setlists: I've spoke at length about how Stroll and Roll Band featured a ton of lighthearted songs from the Pillows back catalogue that worked well with the largely exuberant songs from Stroll and Roll; the band on Moondust Light for You also does a good job of selecting older songs that add to the rockin'(!) but sometimes very emotional feel of the Moondust album material. I didn't actually notice how the band was doing this until I watched Stroll and Roll Band, but now that I have noticed, I've got a new level of appreciation for the Pillows live show.

That's a great point. They vary up their setlists a lot more than many bands I know of, even those with very big discographies. That, on top of their masterful performance... :shred:

reading back thru the Nook thread, I saw two mentions of disappointment at Comic Sonic's digital single release. are people not really into that song? personally, it's one of my favourites off Trial. imo it's both a great pop song and a really inspired one; the video is also sickkkkk. :shred:

unrelated: i was thinkin about all my favourite songs off each Pillows album and wondered what a post-Fool on the Planet greatest hits album would look like. here be my picks; one song per album (cuz otherwise there'd be sooooo many songs) from Smile onwards:

Picks in chronological order:
1. この世の果てまで
2. 白い夏と緑の自転車 赤い髪と黒いギター
3. I know you (close second: ターミナル・ヘヴンズ・ロック)
4. その未来は今 (close second: GOOD DREAMS)
5. サード アイ (close second: My girl)
6. スケアクロウ (close second: BOAT HOUSE)
7. New Animal (EDIT close second: Last Holiday)
8. Beyond the moon (close second: 雨上がりに見た幻)
9. Movement (close second: Doggie Howl)
10. Rescue (close second: エネルギヤ)
11. ハッピー・バースデー (close second: About a Rock'n'Roll Band)
12. レディオテレグラフィー (close second: カッコーの巣の下で)
13. BE WILD (close second: 王様になれ)

Arranged tracklist:
1. サード アイ
2. Movement
3. スケアクロウ
4. その未来は今
5. Rescue
6. New Animal
7. ハッピー・バースデー
8. Beyond the moon
9. I know you
10. レディオテレグラフィー
11. 白い夏と緑の自転車 赤い髪と黒いギター
12. この世の果てまで
13. BE WILD

This is a fun idea, here's mine:

1. Good morning Good news
2. ROBOTMAN
3. Moon Margaret
4. New Year's Eve/Good Dreams
5. Third Eye (high five!)
6. Century Creepers (Voice of the Proteus)/Pleasure Song
7. Ladybird girl/Last Holiday
8. Beyond the moon
9. Nobody knows what blooms
10. TRIAL/エネルギア
11. Moondust/Anemone
12. Eliot's mad Tragic yo
13. Zhelanie

And re: Comic Sonic, that one grew on me, especially after hearing it live. Now it's a favorite, but I actually didn't dig the music video that much. Which is strange, because I loved Ladybird girl's video, and both of those are kind of similar if I'm remembering right...pillows playing and some random stuff going on in a white backdrop or whatever haha. I should rewatch and probably more deeply enjoy that one.

In terms of recent PVs, I really dig Be Your King a lot. :shred:

Very little correlation between our lists, but mad respect anyway; all your picks are among my favourites off their respective albums. Wish I could find room for "Pleasure Song", "Last Holiday" and "Moondust" as I think all three are pretty underrated Pillows songs but the albums they're on just have way too many good tracks on them!

The "Comic Sonic" video is sorta similar to the "Ladybird girl" video but the big difference is the melding of animation and live action in the former. Highlights for me are a hilarious live action shot of Sawao falling backwards into a pool with Flying V in hand, an animated version of the same thing which is really cool, and a few moments where the three band members are split-screened together, comic style for the main riff.

I agree that the "Be Your King" video is awesome. At first I was like "uhhhhh another super fake green-screened video like Cuckoo" but the director did a lot more with the backgrounds this time around than just "epic vaguely surreal settings". The Pillows Clones were also a stroke of brilliance, especially towards the end of the video where there's a whole bunch of them onscreen at once playing the song together!

Speaking of, I just translated BYK (and Hang a vulture), so enjoy seeing the how the words and the video kind of work out together in a pretty fun way for that one. I almost forgot about the cool comic style stuff...in COMIC sonic, haha. Should definitely go rewatch that one now.

I'm glad you started off with alternate picks on your list, because there were some albums for which I can't choose only one lol.

I received a postcard letting me know that I was chosen for the "premiere in store Tower Records mini live", so I'll be attending that next week. :shred:
I can't wait to hear some of the NOOK songs live. :shred:

maaaaaan all the songs off this album are gonna be great live: you've got "Envy", "Hang a vulture!" and "Where do I go?" which are all gonna kick some serious ass; "Coming Soon" which is probably the most fun Pillows song in years; "new born baby" which will chill everyone out; and "pulse" which will bring everyone to tears. but if the album is only half an hour long, I wonder what the band is gonna throw in to fill out the rest of their roughly ~90 minute setlist (there's no way they're just gonna be playin for an hour). btw Mafu let us know how BE WILD turns out; the "BE WILD" shouts are gonna be insane. wouldn't be surprised if some people in the crowd lose their shit.

btw there's totally still copies floating around of that one show where Satou played drums for The Blue Hearts...back when he was still a teen hearthrob.

Man, you're right about those yells on Be Wild. Probably going to be an ENORMOUS sound when every Buster in attendance shouts that out haha.
