WIP. I'm pretty sure most of it is correct but I could use some input from people more fluent than myself, considering how long it's been since I've touched Japanese. (Yay, high-context languages.) I might need to go back and clean some things up for consistency between verses, but I think I got most of it. Some of the lyrics I got were incorrect, so I had to go back and correct some and I'm sure the lyrics in () were just guesses of whomever transcribed them. In any case, I cleaned up what I could, but there still may be some errors.

I tried keeping a more literal translation that's closer to the structure of the verses rather than making it more "localized." The one exception being the default dictionary definition of 罪 being "crime" or "sin" but in the context of the song, Mineta is obviously trying to show remorse so I figured guilt would be the more appropriate translation. Overall though, I think it's in a pretty good spot.

Kinda hits me in the feels with how frank it is. I was expecting something a little more along the lines of classic Mineta ala aidonwanadai.

Heavy lyrics, yeah, especially the "love hotel" part. Do you know if he's written anything as honest and hard-hitting as this before? He certainly seems like the type, although we may know him better for songs like "I Don't Wanna Die".

[u]Some thoughts on "Ikitai":[/u] it's hard not to think about the song's implications for the future of Ging Nang Boyz. It is, after all, the first real GNB song we've gotten since the [i]Hikari[/i] album and [i]BEACH[/i] came out, not counting the Blue Hearts cover. One thing I was definitely surprised by was the role of the full-band instruments in "Ikitai": I was expecting that, maybe, the guys who recorded guitar, bass and drum parts for the new single would end up becoming the new members of GNB, as it was mentioned when Chin, Abiko and Murai left the band that Mineta was going to replace all of them. The past few years of GNB have given the opposite impression, of course, and Mineta's upcoming "one-man" GNB tour probably puts the nail in the coffin, but I definitely thought a new GNB lineup could be a possibility (although no-one could really [i]replace[/i] Chin, Abiko and Murai).

From what I could hear in "Ikitai", however, GNB is really just Mineta now. In retrospect, it seems like the [i]Hikari[/i] album foreshadowed this: though the instrumentation on there was obviously essential, the way Mineta's vocals are mixed understandably gave rise to the half-in-jest comments that [i]Hikari[/i] was a "Mineta solo album". I feel the same way about "Ikitai", partly because of how the vocals are again mixed above the instruments, but also because of how the instrumental parts are fairly passive in the song. At least in comparison to when the original members of GNB were in the band, the instrumentals on "Ikitai" are rarely spotlighted, except for the guitar solo, but even that part seems short and somewhat restricted from sweeping the listener's attention with an incredible melody or something. It might be that a fixation on Mineta is just a characteristic of his long, acoustic-based songs like "Ningen" and "Hikari", but I think even on those songs the other members had way more presence in their parts, like Chin's wild leads, Murai's crashing cymbals, Abiko's vital bass lines, and the backing vocals all those guys contributed. I also think the presence of the other members in those songs was at least partly because their unique musical characteristics.

That sense of presence from the players other than Mineta doesn't really come through on "Ikitai", which I actually think benefits the song. Being that the lyrical content is so personal, the song has an incredible sense of intimacy and soul-baring catharsis to it that can only come from one person, alone. Of course, Mineta isn't alone on "Ikitai", but he's controlled, directed and restricted the other instruments enough that they serve as more of a backdrop for his emotional outpouring rather than becoming a part of that outpouring.

So if Mineta continues to make songs that are as heavily focused on him as "Ikitai" is, I'm sure I'll enjoy them. Not a surprise, really, since Mineta's wrote pretty much everything in both Going Steady and GNB. I suppose the real surprise was seeing what GNB was going to turn into after the original lineup dissolved, and it seems like "Mineta solo project" is our answer. And I'm very happy with that so far.

P.S. the "Poadamu" remix is nice. The strings and piano transform the song into something fairly new; it sounds majestic as hell.

Actually, I was surprised how much this track managed to emulate the previous band's sound. The guitar has less of Chin's wildness, yes, but the bassist is clearly emulating Abiko's tone and runs. The overall tone of the recording, though, is more restrained than Hikari was, going into almost a classic rock mode instead of all-out cacophony. I don't like this as much, but Mineta's performance, as you note, is the star on this one.

Anyway it's good enough but probably my least favorite of this epic "Ningen" trilogy.

Poadamu remix is all right. I could actually do without the strings.

As for GNB in general moving forward, I guess I wouldn't count out the possibility of a full band yet. But I hope he starts putting out more stuff one way or another. And I hope he keeps using the lovely photography motif he's been using the past years.

Ugh, I want a new GNB full-length so bad; I'm used to the Western standard of a new album every two years. And yes, the artwork on the last few releases has been very nice. It seems like the same idea that we've seen on almost every record since "I Don't Wanna Die" but the art on "Ikitai" and the [i]Hikari[/i] album is noticeably way better than that of "I Don't Wanna Die" and "Hikari". My personal favourite piece is the one of the frightened girl with the projection of Mineta cast over her (from the [i]Hikari[/i] artwork and promos). On a somewhat related note, I'm hoping to get a portable scanner sometime in the near future so I can digitise my Ging Nang Boyz photobooks, because GNB has always had a rich visual element to them (through their cover art, promo art, merch art, videos and photos) and I hope some scans will help to share a little more of that side of them.

This was a pretty fun song to translate, especially since it's one of my favorites. Ironically enough the title is the hardest line to translate, so I just said fuck it. Mah bad. =P

So this has probably been my favorite GNB song for a long time off and on, and I spent a lot of time trying to understand the lyrics a few years ago but also struggled with it at the time, I totally feel you on the confusion across some of the lines here. Ask away with any questions for clarification about my approach to the grammar and stuff, happy for any comments or feedback (I tend to try and sort of smooth out the translation a bit more than I used to these days, which always shifts things subtly away from the source material). And yea the abstractness of "Ballad for Brutal Dreamers" gives its translated [i]BEACH[/i] title a nice appropriateness.
