I really like those albums.
But I like all the albums. Oh wells. There are bands whose albums I only like a few of, and whose generally most well-regarded albums really don't jive with me. It happens.

To clarify: I do enjoy those albums, but in considering whether I think they're actually, "objectively" good albums, I don't really think so.

I'll take "Things that don't exist," for $10,000.

Objectively speaking, Thank You, My Twilight is a little hot when it comes to treble. I feel like the mastering could have been better overall on that album. Good Dreams though.. bruh

It was the first album Manabe took the lead on the production for - so it may be partially the production itself rather than the mastering, on this one.

Kind of late, but the pillows use autotune? Are we talking club single autotune? If so, when did this start happening? Pretty much the last album I listened to all the way through was Wake Up. I've listened to songs here and there from them since then, but haven't downloaded or wanted to purchase any of the albums since then since most of what I've heard just hasn't been to my taste.

What's most likely, I'd guess, is that Sawao's vocals are pitch-corrected in the production process. Rather than the harsh, true on-the-fly autotune often used in pop and hip hop. We can "hear" the pitch correction probably because Sawao's vocal take was maybe less than 99% on-key. Or the production was a little sloppy?
Alls I know is that pitch-correction is used in a *ton* of popular music and is often very difficult to notice. The story is that Cher's producers on Believe stumbled onto the idea of forcing the vocal into really harsh and abrupt pitch changes, creating the quintessential "autotune sound" we associate with, like, T-Pain and the like.

Re: The 1st (2nd) Movement, Autotune, & Other Thoughts
Just watched the 2nd movement DVD again yesterday night. The beginning was kind off sloppy, and I almost lost interest... the Girlfriend performance kinda hurt my ears to be honest.. the Angel Fish performance was pretty good though. However..starting from Future things really started to take off.. pretty much spot on performances from there on: Future, Diary of Amnesia, Akanai Tobira no Mae de (In Front of a Locked Door), Tiny Boat, Daydream Wonder, Killing Field were all fantastic. Toy Dolls was just awesome, I really had a smile on most of the performance... how Sawao moved and acted, his little voices, really great all in all. Naked Shuffle was also really cool. And I enjoyed Tonight, quite a bit... mostly because it is Tonight.. such a great song. Yeah, these 2nd Movement shows are such a difference from their regular shows. I would say they are more sophisticated, hell those suits man!, Manabe is totally killing it with his tailor-made suit, and I think they put more thought and effort into the songs.

Diary of Amnesia is seriously one of their most underrated songs. Epic intro. Epic chorus. Where the puck is that plows thread about underrated songs.
