Re: I need new music to buy
I assume Blank meant to check out the stuff people post there and take it as recommendations, but I think it's fine if you post this thread. Not going to stop anyone from making the forum more active.
I'll post some stuff I've been into lately:
The Dreadnoughts (folk/punk):
This is my favorite band I've discovered in the last year or so. Most folk/punk bands are either Irish/Scottish folk and punk mixed or occasionally stuff like Gogol Bordello that's more Slavic/Eastern European folk mixed with punk. They've got songs that incorporate both styles, but I've never really heard too much polka infused punk. Polka Never Dies is my favorite song by them, but pretty much any song of theirs is good. I'll post a few ones I'm particularly fond of. They also do some more sea shanty-ish songs that aren't punk, too.

Blackbird Raum (folk/punk):
This is another folk/punk band that I've gotten into in the last year, but not as much as the Dreadnoughts. Their lyrics aren't the best; they have a very specific eco-anarchist message they're trying to convey and some of their lyrics are kind of interesting, but I dunno, just doesn't do it for me. Plus, I read an interview with the band and they were talking about how they would steal shit, including accordions, or maybe still stole shit, and it seemed very douche-y and BRO I'M SO ANARCHIST xD STOLE A $1k+ INSTRUMENT. So maybe don't buy their music, but listen to it on youtube or Spotify.
Anyway, their music is interesting at the very least. My favorite song from theirs is Witches. I haven't explored much outside of the album that's on so I'll just be linking stuff from that.

Leningrad (ska/punk):
This is a band I found on the subreddit for studying Russian. Рыба/ryba (fish) was the first song I heard from them and it's still one of my favorites. This is another band I have a bit of a reservation about because they (or at least Shnur, the singer) may or may not be homophobic (which I'm not saying just because they're Russian); on one video which, surprisingly, had an English comment on it, someone mentioned the fact that they use a Russian word in a song or an interview or something that's essentially just pederast which Russians use a slur similar to the f-bomb slur in English then someone stepped in and was like "he's not homophobic, he just thinks gays should keep to themselves" which is p. damn homophobic so, take that as you will. The music's good and I think? it's free on their site because I think this is another anarchist band, but not sure on that since most of the shit on them is untranslated and just in Russian. So, once again another one you might not want to buy, but you can check them out on youtube and Spotify.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-CnWwbeetE Рыба/Ryba (Fish); love song about the singer saying he's fished around and caught a lot of girls, but the only fish for him is the person the song is addressed to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y748pXFfy_w Фиаско/Fiasko (I think Fiasco?); not sure the fuck this is about, but the chorus includes the words penis and phallus (or at least as far as I can tell.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiFgwttgblQ Интеграл/Integral - I think this is about some singer and the chorus is something like "I figured out the integral", I only took one semester of Russian so I'm shit at it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96x3EFq2zhM WWW - WWW as in world wide web; song's about their website and is essentially like "I moved and got a new address, it's www leningrad spf . ru" and some other shit making a joke about it being a web address/home address.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp8PmgPW_AI Почём звонят колокола?/Pochyom zvonyat kolokola? (Had to use google translate for it, but it's something like for whom does your bell toll) and it's called Москва/Moskva (Moscow) on the album, I think. If I remember the translation, it's a song that's talking about how everyone else in Russia wishes for Moscow to burn down with everyone in it, including Putin and Pussy Riot and blahblah.
Charan Po Rantan (folk/pop?):
Two Japanese sisters that usually have a backing band with them. One sings and one plays the accordion. I found them sometime over the summer. Really like them and plan on searching for their stuff next time I get a chance to head over to Book Off. Favorite song by them is Watashi No Uchuu.

https://youtu.be/M1lJkbdqOOE Hava Nagila; this is actually done by their backing band along with the accordion playing sister.
https://youtu.be/WdRBFOyqYYc I Want You To Be My Baby; kind of an inverse of this, this is actually a completely different backing band along with another singer but with the singer from Charan Po Rantan joining in and doing a Japanese language version of this song.

Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra (Folk/World):
I just found this band yesterday, but I'm really liking them. They do various folk songs from mostly Klezmer and Gypsy musical traditions, as the name suggests, in a variety of languages.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23dW3H9yFSU Djelem Djelem; this is actually supposed to be the theme song for the Romani/Gypsy (Gypsy actually being a slur) people.

Howlin' Wolf (blues):
One of the most famous blues musicians. Been getting back into playing guitar and have been focusing on blues so I've been listening to some of the older greats. I don't think he plays guitar but a lot of the songs he's recorded are blues standards.
