Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Can we unanimously agree that Saiyaman is the worst thing to happen to the DBZ universe ever?

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I blame Videl's influence. She probably told Gohan it was kind of cool or some shit.

Iiiiiiiiinteresting.
I've been watching Dragon Ball Kai with the wife, who never really watched but a little bit of DBZ. Really enjoying it.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Hesitantly excited about the FLCL news. Seems like a bad idea since FLCL is basically just GAINAX condensed and strained, but fuck it. It's one of the four things I have any ounce of nostalgia for

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
So...Katanagatari had an ending badass as fuck. I would've given the show a 9/10 (which is an extremely high rating for me,) but I'm knocking it down to an 8 just for like the last minute or so that really pissed me off.
I'm not sure I can really recommend it, considering that the otaku content might bother a lot of casual viewers, but the Monogatari series was written by the same guy as Katanagatari and animated by a much more interesting studio. Maybe worth a look. Bakemonogatari at least. The more perverse fanservice starts in Nisemonogatari, which is even better IMO, but your gravity wavelength may vary.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Today I learned there is a 4th Lupin the Third series airing in Japan. My friend was all "Wow, you srsly didn't know that?" Lol. So I'm looking forward to checking that out.
I recently watched Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. It was a really cool series, just the ending was a little bit less than I was hoping for.
Needs no remake.
Yeah, this news was totally bizarre. It's not even that old. Nothing about it is truly dated, and I don't know how anyone expects to catch lightning the way Gainax could in that era. Best thing airing right now is Boku dake ga Inai Machi. Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Been watching this neat new anime that's come out called Ajin. It's pretty fuckin' cool.
It's a story of a group of people that are demi-human (read: ajin) that revive every time they're killed, but they're extremely rare so the government is hunting them down. It's a little bit like X-men in that the Ajin are a persecuted group of people. I think it's only got fourteen episodes or so right now, but so far it's pretty sweet. Every episode makes me want to watch the next one and it's got a good amount of high-quality drama. This is one of the few shows I've encountered (like Death Note) where I can't tell where the story is going to go next, so it's pretty exciting especially since it doesn't fit all the stereotypical anime tropes.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Hopped on the anime train pretty hard recently, watched several really great shows:
Death Note - lives up to its hype, although the ending felt like a damned cop-out to me Ano hana - romantic and sad, great soundtrack (actually sat through the opening/closing pretty often) Psycho Pass - dark badass noir with sick psychological/philosophical content Shin sekia yori - thought-provoking and atmospheric, memorable themes Kill La Kill - Gurren Lagann on meth/steroids, over-the-top in the best of ways
Good stuff amigos.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name) was really special. Hell of a movie. Saw it twice, will buy it when it's available. The other film I quite enjoyed was The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, I was surprised to see it in Wal-Mart so I grabbed it. Two other films that I saw but only enjoyed moderately were The Garden of Words and The Wind Rises. Garden of Words was like, meh ok I guess, and The Wind Rises didn't really do it for me, but it was reasonably enjoyable.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Dude! Kimi no na wa and Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo were both fantastic! We just watched those recently, as well.
Right now we're watching one called No Game No Life. It gets a bit silly with the "self-aware anime tropes" thing as far as "fan service" stuff goes, but only briefly and it keeps making up for that with a great story, funny gags, and good pacing.
Before that, we watched Log Horizon (good, but the author got charged with tax fraud or some such and so the third season may never happen; worth watching but you won't get to see the story play out fully, which kind of sucks) and Sword Art Online (SO GOOD. SO. GOOD. A-1 PICTURES TAKE ALL MY MONEY), which has two killer seasons, a sick OVA that just came out, and a third season in the works. There's also a really fun hack and slash mobile game for SAO called Memory Defrag which is pretty great.
