Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
They showed Akira on Toonami and I watched most of it (for the first time). Kaori...

:squish: :crunch: Speaking of squishing and crunching, Blood fucking C. I remember when Blood+ was on [as], seemed ok but I didn't really watch much of it, but a few weeks ago I saw a youtube vid on gory anime scenes, and the last episode of Blood C was hilariously disturbing.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I just started Sword Art Online. It's the first anime I've watched in a long while, maybe since graduating from college. It's pretty good; I like how they presented the characters being trapped in the online world. I know there's been a lot of hype around it (and Attack on Titan too) and it's pretty enjoyable so far, but on one hand, I wonder if I'm just growing out of the anime-watching phase of my life.
I dunno, it's not that I dislike anime or anything like that, but I feel a lot of it is pretty stale and just doesn't grasp me like it used to. Maybe I'm a little jaded now, I don't know, but recently I've been getting into more manga (manhwa, to be specific) and I think one draw for manhwa in general is that it doesn't have that same formulaic feel to it that manga does. Of course I'm sure I'm just over-generalizing, but one thing that's been annoying me is just how every manga/anime ever kinda devolves itself into being Dragonball Z by the end of it--Bleach and Naruto being quite guilty of this.
Anyway, I know this isn't the manga thread, but three amazing manhwa I'd recommend are: Tower of God, The Gamer (it's kinda like SA:O,) and DICE. I cannot recommend DICE highly enough. Its pacing is fantastic and it hooked me in pretty quickly.
Hell, maybe I should take a stab at writing again. Maybe with the life experiences I've had I can make a better attempt at it now than before.
EDIT: Just got halfway through SA:O and holy shit. I did not see that coming.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I'm the kind of guy who will start watching a series and never finish it. I've left many unfinished. But I binged Death Note to the end recently. I'm not really sure why; it wasn't even that good, haha.
It was like Breaking Bad (though less well-thought-out). A criminal trying to live a normal life, having to constantly lie and consider every angle of every situation. Being thrown into many difficult situations, having to directly confront people with lie after lie, with his entire life at stake. It was more nerve-wracking than anything else.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I like to pretend that the second half of Death Note doesn't exist.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I saw a couple episodes of SA: O and I thought it was neat, like another .hack, but I had no idea it was one of the BIG shows.
I saw there's an anime about table tennis, I'd like to watch that one.
I like to pretend that the second half of Death Note doesn't exist.
Yeah, it definitely brought the show down in my view. I hated the ending, too. It seemed like an arbitrary decision to end it in that way at that point.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
EDIT: Just got halfway through SA:O and holy shit. I did not see that coming.
Well, the second half really sucked. I hated how blatant a lot of the fanservice was in the anime and I absolutely hated how they made a strong, independent woman (Asuna) into a damsel-in-distress in the second half. One thing I really appreciated was how Asuna really seemed to be her own person for the first half of the anime.
*sigh*
Anyway, I've moved onto Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil) and it's pretty delightfully deranged. A very interesting watch for now and I'm only two episodes in.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
haha, from what I gathered that is how everyone felt post watch. Do they just make these shows with different teams working in isolation?

I've been starting to feel the same way... I tried watching Attack on Titan because I kept hearing so much about it (also I read a little of the manga and it sounded interesting), and while I didn't particularly dislike it, I didn't really feel compelled to continue after the first few episodes. Just the way they do the characters and some of the story felt cliche.
I do want to watch Parasyte at some point though, I enjoyed the manga so hopefully the anime is decent.

Even if you saw past episode 5 and still feel that way, I think it's a good show. Plus I think a 2nd season is coming this year. Oh, and I bought the akira 25th anniversary bluray. I didn't catch all of it on toonami so I decided to buy it.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I just finished Aku no Hana, and I have to say it's a fantastic anime. One with an unlikable main character as well as cast, and I think it's precisely because the main character and most of the cast is so unlikable that it's fantastic. It's a bit upsetting that it's been cut into parts, with only Part I being complete, but it's just encouraged me to read the manga, where there is more depth to some of the characters, I hear.
I know most people probably wouldn't enjoy the anime, and that's fine. Instead of recommending it myself, I'll quote someone else's criticism to a negative review of the show.
Most of the time, it treads on thin ice, with themes that aren't actually explained. People who can relate will immediately relate. People who cannot will be left confused and just... well, without trying to be insulting, just left behind really.
EDIT: Holy fuck, holy fuck. I just caught up to the end of the anime and the manga and continued the story a bit and if the rest of the manga gets made into an anime, holy fuck. In many ways, I could call it bad, unrealistic writing...but after watching the manga and learning a bit more about Baudelaire, I think the anime does an amazing job of adapting the manga and giving it a little extra oomph in the process. The only criticism I have is that in the manga it makes the characters seem more juvenile (they're only supposed to be in middle school) and the anime makes them appear older (and the main character seem like more of a bitch.)
I wouldn't say the writing is realistic by any means, but there's something at the heart of it that feels very honest to me.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I just started watching Rage of Bahamut: Genesis. It's pretty interesting so far. Not sure if it's going to be good or bad yet, cliche-wise, but I'm willing to give it a shot. The animation is top-notch AND it's up on Funimation's website to watch subbed online for free, and it's updated weekly. I finally feel like I'm living in an age of refinement. http://www.funimation.com/shows/rage-of ... nesis/home

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Watching an anime called Kaiji at Jolmes' recommendation. Digging it a lot so far, 8 eps into the first of two seasons.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I've been watching Hokuto no Ken (fist of the north star) for the first time, and Rurouni Kenshin (first time in Japanese), really enjoying FOTNS, it mixes cheesy and badass/drama well. I honestly like Rurouni Kenshin in English more though, Steve Blum is a way better Shishio. Aside from the random southern accents they put in there it's a really solid dub. The southern accent they gave Cho actually was clever since in the original I think he speaks in Osaka dialect.
