I would have liked Psuedonym and Brye's covers a lot more if it weren't for the vocals. They're just really unnatural in both.
I think he could be alluding to the pronunciation of Japanese moreso than the singing itself sounding "unnatural." I think your overall vocal tone improved a bit, but you do still have a tendency towards a sort of "wide" vowel sound that can be a bit overly strong.
There's really no wrong way to sing, though, and people like different things. If you want to "improve" an area to get it closer to a sound you like, more power to you, but don't worry too much about others' taste if you're satisfied with something.

Rewrite the lyrics in English.
But do it well. =P
Or, you know, there's nothing that says you have to have vocals. It could be an instrumental cover.

I've always been against that because I've yet to see one that's fit really well. :/
And that's true....I could do an instrumental, I suppose!

Or pick an English song. That's how the Gazelle City cover from last contest turned out well.

Nah. Nahhhhhh. Shit is really hard with music unless you're ridiculously talented. Hell, +/-'s covers of bloodthirsty butchers tracks are cute, but you can seriously feel the awkwardness of the phrasing. And remember that Taffy dude's Another Morning cover? Seriously a reallllly hard sell.

Are you saying I'm not ridiculously talented?? /s
No, but I agree...like I've said, I've yet to see anyone pull it off, especially with the pillows. Not like Sawao's melodies are suuuper intricate, but they fit the Japanese just right, and rarely match up to the English, be it a direct translation, or a complete rewrite. It just feels, off. Always.

Re: The Pillows 25th Anniversary Dance & Cover Contest?
Looking at the lyrics for Tabasco Disco and Doggie Howl just made me realize how bad Sawao's english is. I really hope he stops writing songs in English...judging by how his latest solo album is in Japanese maybe he's finally given up? I honestly hope so. It made me absolutely hate trial...the album only has like 3 good songs on it (energiya, trial, and mochinushi no nai gitaa) There are some songs which could have been cool that got ruined by the English lyrics.

My school chums Adam and Michael did the "shoegaze/bedroom pop" version of Girls Don't Cry for the 20th cover contest and made it into the top 16 last time. It was really good too!

Solid as heck!
Yeah, that was fantastic. My only complaint is that the solo lacked that 'directionality' Manabe's good solos generally have. It was more of a mishmash of licks, rather than a coherent idea as in the original Good Dreams solo. (I feel like many of Manabe's recent solos have been lacking this directionality too)

Easily one of the best entries. I'm not a fan of that vocal sound, but they nailed the cover hella.

Re: The Pillows 25th Anniversary Dance & Cover Contest?
I also like the song choice. At the time I never liked that album, but in retrospect it's actually a lot better than, say, Penalty Life. It still has the distinction of having the worst pillow's song ever on there, but a lot of the tracks (New Year's Eve, Sono Mirai, Orange Film Garden...etc.) are actually really good.
