Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
Would be nice if that setlist was real. Sad thing is, they've played older songs like Daydream Wonder and 90's My Life before and they've always dumbed it down to a rock song. Unless old concert footage turns up I doubt we'll ever see it live the way it was recorded.

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
But wasn't DAYDREAM WONDER and 90'S MY LIFE basically rock songs? I mean they don't sound similar indeed but they followed the usual rock verse-chorus, 4/4 beat format.

At this point though, I'ma take what I can get. Glad to see they're playing such awesome old songs again!

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
Yeah, and it's not just his tone. Listen to the chorus in the live version, Manabe is just strumming chords. The entire phrasing of the song is simplified considerably. Jun is a competent bassist but he's not Tatsuya.
Sawao has also gone on record saying that he hates the way his voice sounds on the old albums so he's certainly not putting any effort in to getting the tenor of the song correct, either.
I guess i'm being overly negative but i'm not a "take what I can get" kind of person. If they arn't going to play the songs at all the way they recorded them, i'd rather see old footage (that I know for a fact exists) than old songs played in their new style.

Rock n roll bands have played Jazz-styled rock in the past. A few examples: Bill Haley & the Comets - Thirteen Women The Beatles - Tell Me Why If rock n roll bands can play jazz-styled music and still be considered rock, then why not the pillows? Anyways I listened to your links, and I get at what you're saying by the pillows performing their old Jazz Rock songs into just Rock songs nowadays. However, There doesn't seem to be much difference I mean the song still incorporates chord tensions that you would find in a jazz song. That's how it sounds jazzy and not just the tone of the instruments. Just because Manabe has his guitar in distortion doesn't mean it's no longer jazzy.

I think we're being awfully negative here. Are we really going to let this whole 6th page be full of complaining. Think for a second here, fans: the pillows just played the ENTIRETY of Kool Spice, they just played Boku de Irareru yo ni, they just played TONIGHT... and there's fucking complaining. I was so ecstatic when I read this set list, so happy to share in the revelry with my fellow fans of this amazing happening, and it's almost all negative. The pillows playing this show is one of the main reasons they are my favorite band. Who else would do this? Who else would play extremely old songs they haven't practiced in years as a service to their fans? And that goes for both Western and Japanese bands. I can think of no other band that delves this deep into their discography on even one occasion, let alone three... four if you count the 1st Movement show. I'm sure these songs sounded a little different, and so what? The pillows have grown a lot in 25 years, and it's good to hear some variation. I thought the Daydream Wonder and Girlfriend live performances during the Lostman Go To Yesterdy Tour were superb. Yea, they were a little more rocked out, but that's because they're evoking their current style while still playing those same amazing melodies that Sawao wrote 20 years prior. Also, I think the updated versions are a treat. The pillows always stick VERY close to the studio versions of their songs when they play live. Bands usually change things up on songs when they perform live; it's where they have that wiggle room to expound on something, and try a different variation on a classic song, i.e., when The Smashing Pumpkins played Today live recently, and added an amazing guitar solo at the end of the song. If Sawao wants to change these older songs up a little more, that's more than fine with me. I'd rather he and the band change minor things up then play the song as is on the record.. because quite frankly I could just listen to the CD at home. Playing a song to suit the moment at any given live show is something artists should strive for. Also keep in mind most of these songs haven't been played... or probably even thought of by the band in over a decade. If a few parts sound a little simplistic, I'd cut them some slack. They just relearned close to 20 songs! That takes a lot of effort! Sawao said himself on the Pied Piper DVD that he felt like he was "playing in a pillows copy band." It's like new territory for them. Now that my rant is done, I'm heavily anticipating this DVD. I really think Sawao and the gang outdid themselves playing Kool Spice in its entirety, and throwing in the one b-side from that era. I have nothing to complain about. I'm sure Something Like a Romance (one of my three fav songs off Living Field), Happy Slave and Native World will be played at one of the other shows. It'd be really interesting if they threw one of the songs from the Special CD in there too... or maybe even the original arrangement of Patricia. I did think the inclusion of Primer Beat was very appropriate though in the final encore. I always thought that song was very evocative of the Kool Spice days; Sawao obviously thought so too. It kind of bridged the gap between old and new it would seem. Same for Tonight. It's obvious that song was foreshadowing what was to come on the band's following two albums. Including it in this show for the Second Movement was a great choice. Again though, beyond excited to see this DVD and getting a chance to finally hear these songs performed live!

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
And if I was actaully there, in person, hearing them play these songs live I would not care how they sounded. It would be amazing to experience these songs being played live in any capacity, and accuracy would be the furthest thought in my mind. But I wasen't there.
And because I wasen't there, all I (and anyone else who wasen't there) will see from the show is recorded performances on YouTube or the DVD, either way it is still a recording and I would simply prefer see a recording from when they actaully played these songs faithfully to the album.
Living Field is pretty much my favorite Pillows album followed up by Kool Spice, don't misunderstand me I want this to be good.
Maybe they put more effort into playing the songs faithfully for this show, they had a guest keyboardist afterall and Sawao even used a Tele again. They've played old songs before, never all at once but they've done it and it always left me wanting. Maybe this will be different.

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
Different viewpoints obviously, but I agree with Goshin, these shows are the shows that a couple a years ago we dreamed about on these boards, and they've finally come to life.
I can't wait to get the DVD, even if it is the Lostman Goes to Yesterday style rock-stock remixes. They're still rocking it, and I'm eating it up! I'd love if they tried to give it their all in recreating their old sound, but obviously they've evolved, and this is where they are now. I'd rather see them play their old songs again than not hear them at all.
EDIT: and that first shirt is pretty sweet. I'd totally rock the Swinger's Night Club shirt though!
I wish they'd come to the states :/

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
The negativity here is appalling. I'm with Goshin. This is amazing. That setlist is fucking right out of 1995, and yet we still get people immediately complaining. Wtf?
I mean, they recruited a keyboard player, fucking dressed up for it, and even used guitars that they don't normally use! True, we don't know what it sounds like, and only have more recent performances to go off of... but damn. They obviously really hard for these shows, and for us as fans, this is the ultimate treat. We're lucky as fuck that this is even happening!
Me? I'm ecstatic, and looking forward to the DVD of this performance.

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
Unless they build a time machine and recruit their younger selves to perform the songs in the present day, I won't listen! But for serious, I'm excited. I don't think that my last comment was overly negative or anything. Or at least, it wasn't intended to be. I see Spike's point, and think it would be awesome if they played the songs as they were recorded. But if they don't, I sure as shit won't complain. This is a big deal, and I never thought we'd get something like this. Not raggin' on them! The fact that they did dress up for it and threw in some keyboard is especially AWESOME! I'm looking forward to this, and could see myself actually ordering a Blu-ray of it. I'm just curious about what it'll sound like. Will they go for the older sound, or will they rock-stock it up? Even if it's the latter, that's not a bad thing by any means, and I'm sure I'll still lap it up. Even if I prefer the original recordings, their rock-stock/turn back versions of old songs have all been pretty rad, IMO. It's a good time to be a buster right now. And I'm thankful for this, definitely. Looking forward to this more than virtually anything else at the moment.

Re: 90s MY LIFE RETURNS AGAIN
A few of the classic rock acts are now performing entire albums on tour these days and I love that. Springsteen is one artist that comes to mind. But yes, this is indeed why the pillows are amazing. Wish that 1st movement show was a little longer though! What sucks though is that if the sets are varied for the next couple shows, only one makes the DVD.
