Ah, yeah. I remember reading that now. Well, fingers crossed that they'll someday see a release!

Perhaps the short version we have is what was presented to and rejected by the label. Cuz why the hell would they record a snippet anyway? There probably is no full recording.

This is also a very probable possibility.

Stupid fucking label.

Edit: But I'm willing to bet they recorded those shows where they performed Liberty and Futures from the mid-90s. It's THOSE we need to get our hands on.

Supposedly they played it live. I remember some guy had an archive of old Pillows set lists and it was on there.

lol

I heard here that Sawao performed unreleased songs live in the past not only FUTURE and Liberty, but also NEVER ON AIR, ano koro ni modotte, ano hi to onaji sore no shita de, and henri verdoux no shougai.

I really don't think this makes sense. Remember, Sawao said the label themselves rejected Liberty and Future as being singles. That means there was at least a demo submitted to King Records, and there's no reason to doubt that it was a full band recording. As to why they would record a snippet... well, they wouldn't. Perhaps the video we have is a snippet of the song, but bands do stuff like that in the studio a lot, sometimes for archiving purposes, sometimes for just having fun. And it was obvious in that video it wasn't the first time the band was playing Liberty. That was live in studio. They most probably laid down their own individual instrumental tracks to tape, DAT, whatever, well before that video was recorded. I think there most definitely is a full band recording of Liberty, and it's different from the video we have.

And yes, they did play Liberty live during the Swanky Street tour in 1996, seen HERE.

As for Future, that was played during the Tiny Boat tour in October 1995 (fun note... Beautiful Picture was also played at this show, well over two years before its official release), and during the Strange Chameleon tour in July 1996. Given the space between those two shows, I find it hard to believe that a studio recording was never laid down for Future as well. With the pillows' output, I think it's fairly reasonable just about every song Sawao has written has gotten at least a studio demo. I wouldn't be surprised if there were full band recordings of songs like Never on Air and Bokudake no Mona Lisa hidden somewhere deep in the vault. Remember Flag Star? That was another Penalty Life era unreleased song, and it never saw the light of day until the 20th anniversary, and who had heard of it before then? It's totally reasonable to believe that songs we KNOW exist have been recorded at some time by the band.

To play the devil's advocate here, while those are decent points, playing live means nothing in regards to a studio recording, especially since you tend to start playing the song live before you record it. It's not at all unreasonable to think that some labels might ask for a few short versions of potential singles (through the first chorus, enough to get the idea across) to sift through, but unless any of us can find some direct evidence or provide a personal experience working with Japanese music labels, I don't think we can really even have this argument, lol.

Heh, you're right, it's mostly conjecture. I'm just basing it off what I've seen other bands do (mainly US bands), and while I have no firm evidence, I still think it's reasonable Liberty and Future exist in a recording somewhere... at the very least in a personal demo by Sawao himself. It would be much easier if we could just get a deluxe version of Please Mr. Lostman or something and see what goodies actually were recorded by the band during that time period. But... wishful thinking I suppose.

That's exactly my point: we don't really know. The Buster bias is going to be that IT'S OUT THERE, MAN. We want it to exist. It may be reasonable to suspect that there are full recordings (which would have been mastered and released had they gotten the green light), but not to assume.

Flag Star is better than everything on Penalty Life, not gonna lie.

I am sure an original of Liberty/Future exist, but they might be of poor quality. Remember how shitty Pantomime/90s my life/Moon Gold/White Incarnation all sound mastering wise?

They sound fine to me. ^_^

Also, Liberty and Futures would've been recording during the Living Field era, which has excellent production value. :D

Flag Star is NOT better than The Scar Whispers! :suspicious:

And on the surface the old albums sound great, but tabbing out those old songs showed me that the mastering truly was pretty terrible. I don't know if it was producer error or the product of the times' technology.

I just like the dankiness of the older recordings. It'd be nice to have better quality on them, but they wouldn't have the same charm.
