Steve, I understand your point of view, but I would not have gone against Manabe in a pillows forum. Yeah, he fucks stuff up sometimes. Yes, Yngwie could shred him a new asshole.

Yngwie probably had to practice 10+ hours a day to get where he is.
Manabe probably smoked pot and listened to reggae.

I've heard Yngwie's playing and, although he is technically far superior, Manabe's solos do a lot more for me.

Also, Manabe is in a pop-rock band, not some sort of neo-classical prog-metal shred trio. If Manabe started doing shitty "OMG MY GUITAR IS MY PENIS" solos in Pillows songs I would be very, very sad.

i'm not asking him to shred, but only to play his material without making me soft.

You enjoy musical maturbation. We get it.

Although for once, I do agree with you. Not about Manabe being a bad player (I kinda admire him myself) but about Sawao's chord progressions being more important to The Pillows' music. A lot of their songs (post-PML, at least) are instantly recognizable from the rhythm playing.

I'm not saying Manabe contributes nothing, but I think the rhythm guitar generally makes or breaks the song.

The only pillows song that has rythm guitar that is impressive to me is Girls Don't Cry. One damn song.

When I compare that to the amount of times Yoshiaki has made me wonder how someone could be that awesome, there's no contest. For me, it's not how fast and complicated a guitarist can demonstrate their lack of emotion and taste. It's how the guitarist communicates his true feelings through his instrument. Not every song in the world is supposed to have tastelessly annoying seven minute long solos. You're just going to have to get used to that.

It's not the rhythm playing that's impressive so much as the chord progressions he uses.

It's not exactly IMPRESSIVE either in terms of skill, but it's catchy. That's what makes Pillows songs. And as far as memorable rhythm playing goes, most of their songs have it.

You're going to have to get used to the fact that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Does Manabe make up everything Sawao plays? I always thought that he made up the lead and the rhythm and just told Sawao what to play.

Both Sawao and Manabe are solid as fuck though, which is all they need to be for the music they're playing. The both have much better time then most rock guitarists.
