The PIllows Shout Outs!
What I mean by shout outs is when the pillows make shout outs to other bands in their music.
For example: At the end of "Back Seat Dog", they start to sing "Here Comes Your Man" by Pixies. Also the song title "Kim Deal" is the name of their bassist.
Did you guys catch any other shout outs like this? Have they done anything like that recently?

Re: The PIllows Shout Outs!
The only other two I can think of right now (and aren't exactly the same as back seat dog or kim deal) are No Self Control, and Fakin it... No self control because of the music video and style (Nirvana), and Fakin it cause well, it's a cover... XD Those are lame examples but really the only other ones I can think of... I suppose Please Mr. Lostman is a play on "Please Mr. Postman" by the beatles as well...

Re: The PIllows Shout Outs!
Oh yeah. They have tons of Beatles references.

Re: The PIllows Shout Outs!
"Across the Metropolis" is really similar to The Beatles "Across the Universe"

What you mean by "shout outs" is allusions to other artists.

Homages if you will...iirc there is a list floating around, or maybe it was on the main site? It's very outdated though.

Re: The PIllows Shout Outs!
Here's an obscure one most people probably don't know: the wolf cry at the beginning of Bad Dreams is from a John Lennon song called "Scared" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZxMxtBkOiI). Others I can think of off the top of my head (all Beatles homages): - The "beep beep, beep beep, yeah!" at the end of ROSS, lifted directly from Drive My Car. - Pretty sure they've covered Come Together at some point. From what I understand, Sawao has also covered Smells Like Teen Spirit through his Predators side project.

I remember seeing a video of their cover on Youtube at one point. I think it was the '91 Hibiya Yagai Ongakudo show. I tried to find it but it seems to have been removed.

Re: The PIllows Shout Outs!
Not sure if these are "homages", lazy director or what... But... New Animal's PV is extremely similar to the video of "Atlus" by the band "Battles". http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/2345/newatlas.jpgAlso, if you watch the video for "Sick Muse" by METRIC, it's easy to see where the inspiration for Split Emotion's PV came from. Re: The PIllows Shout Outs!
Great thread idea.
Music: -Many of Nine Miles's lyrics were taken from Bob Marley songs. -It's been said that Sawao was inspired for Terminal Heaven's Rock by this song: Motoharu Sano - Happy Man -...which is on an album called No Damage, which might be what Sawao is referencing in Instant Music. -On The Predators's live DVD they play a song called Good Manners which, IIRC, is essentially Nirvana's Territorial Pissings with different lyrics.
Movies: -Sawao said in an interview that he named Scarecrow after the movie Scarecrow with Al Pacino. -The great dictator in Biscuit Hammer is probably a reference to the Charlie Chaplin movie. -My Beautiful Sun (Irene) was inspired by a character in Gattaca. (interview at anime boston '08)
