Re: the pillows - TRIAL (Album Discussion)
Why would they regret it? It was Avex that brought them to itunes in the first place. And also, yes, every thing they've released since joining avex has outsold the King Records stuff by many, many units.

Re: the pillows - TRIAL (Album Discussion)
Forgive me. I have never posted anything on a forum before, ever. Please don't hurt me. I thought the album was pretty good. I agree that the Engrish on Minority Whisper killed that song for me. It's very hard to take it seriously, especially after the apple juice bit. I understand what he was doing, but still.... Oh by the way, were you all able to get a good translation of all the songs, like 持ち主のないギター? If not, let me know. By the way, why does everyone hate OOPARTS so much? hahaha I actually kind of liked it. I guess I'll have to go back and read that thread or topic or something.

Re: the pillows - TRIAL (Album Discussion)
I'll let someone else answer the other stuff but I can answer this:
People don't like OOPARTS because it doesn't feel honest. And no one can really take engrish seriously. Most agree that it would be better if he wrote those songs in english because Japanese don't understand him and neither do ACTUAL english speakers.

Re: the pillows - TRIAL (Album Discussion)
I haven't been around here for the past several years, so I have no idea what the general consensus on the last few albums is. I certainly don't agree that OOParts was any less of an effort than Horn Again or Trial, though.
Welcome aboard, TheFamousLoser. You seem like a pretty chill dude.

People shit all over OOPARTS because a lot of our members aren't mature enough to let other people like something they don't in peace.

It's true.
If the members of the pillows were to see what was said in here... they'd never come to America again.

Thank you! You do too!
I completely agree that the English is weird. I wish he would stick with Japanese, because the most of the lyrics from his Japanese songs are so good! I especially love the album Please Mr. Lostman. It's really serious and feels honest. The English songs don't feel honest I guess because he can't truly express himself. There's definitely no way I could write a song in Japanese. haha But they have written so many songs. They have an enormous discography. Maybe to keep his songs from starting to all sound the same lyrically, he writes some in English.
Anyway, did anybody else fell weird about the sound of the guitars from this album? It sounds too processed or something. I don't really know the word for it. haha But doesn't anybody feel that too? Maybe it's just me. It definitely has a different sound to it. I'm getting more used to it now.
I thought the songs were kind of repetitive too. Especially REVIVAL and Trial and エネルギヤ. I like those songs a lot, but usually Manabe puts a few different licks here in there to change it up a bit. He just stuck with the same riff, and I got tired of it after a while.
I like the album, but I don't think it was THAT much better than the last ones. It just had less songs on that made you think "what the hell were they thinking".

Re: the pillows - TRIAL (Album Discussion)
I may say "we" a lot in the next few passages, as I'm just trying to condense what I think happened to the best of what I recall... By no means do I feel it's exactly the reasoning.
First, I felt that Ooparts didn't really have a lot of oomph, and a little too much cutesy stuff for what I would hope they produce. Some songs just felt silly to listen to, like Foxes... Life Size Life... Melody... while others had bits we tended to appreciate, like Johnny Strobe's chorus and outro or Dance with God's guitar effects and vibe... and we did genuinely enjoy Lemon Drops, Ameagari ni mita mabaroshi, Primer Beat.
I don't remember everything that went on in that discussion, and I'm hoping I wasn't a big dick to anybody or anything, but a lot of people had widely varying opinions as to what was good and bad. At the time we were a bit negatively charged from our experiences with Pied Piper and Wake Up!, which we felt was like a snowball rolling down a hill. Fewer of what we felt were A-material pillows, more "homogenized" guitar sound/production, more quirk coming from the backseat and more into focus... Ooparts just seemed to be the right combination for the negativity to really fly out. A lot of "if you like this you live in a music vaccum" and "you have objectively shitty taste because x" was part of the chatter throughout IM at the time, which, you know, however much length added to e-peen from "winning" such arguments really didn't add up to anything net positive for the forum as far as I can see.
Do I like Pied Piper or Horn Again significantly more than Ooparts? Not really. Trial, yeah, quite a bit more.

Re: the pillows - TRIAL (Album Discussion)
Eh, I gave PL the cold shoulder because everyone shat on it back in the day, but once I sat down and listened to it, I fell in love. There's too much awesome in there to deny.
Anyways, I still feel that Trial is significantly better than the last two entries. I have my reasons too. But I've already stated them. Different strokes for different folks. I don't necessarily think Ooparts and Horn Again are terrible albums. They're just... not very special to me. At all. Which is a tragedy for a buster, no?

I Know You Moon Marguerite, I love!!!! I actually really like "the scar whispers...." too. Even though Sawao's voice is kind of annoying on that song. The live acoustic version of that song on the Blue Poppies DVD is so great.
Anyways, I still feel that Trial is significantly better than the last two entries. Which is a tragedy for a buster, no?
The only reason I was disappointed with Horn Again was because I saw the live concert before I listed to the CD. haha Of the course the live was way better than the actual CD. Songs like "Nobody Knows What Blooms" were awesome live, but when I heard it on the CD I thought it was really weird with all the random instruments thrown in there, in my opinion. Doggie Howl was much better live too. "Movement" was so amazing live. I can't wait to see the TRIAL tour live in Sapporo. I bet it's going to be amazing.
