I like that book. It's all tragic.
I just finished The Stand - the extended edition. Really depressing at first and hard to slog through at points, but good characterizations and world building.

Re: what are you reading?
1Q84 has been fantastic so far. I'm about 160 pages in (give or take 20) and loving it. I know Thinline was almost done reading a version on his tablet, but is anybody else going through the new English edition that came out last month?
is anybody else going through the new English edition that came out last month?
It's kind of dumb, but I'm waiting for the paperback. All of my other Murakami books are paperback, and I feel like the hardcover (gorgeous as it is) would look kind of weird on my shelf next to all of the paperbacks. So no, I haven't started it yet. I look forward to it though, and I've heard only good things. Plus, I've got a few novels left in Murakami's catalogue that I haven't gotten around to reading yet, so I'm hoping to have them all finished by the time the paperback of 1Q84 comes out.
I've been reading Dracula. Pretty good.

Re: what are you reading?
Volume 1 of the Belgariad (Pawn of Prophecy + Queen of Sorcery + Magician's Gambit).
Fun read, although the racism in the book annoyed me- I get this just was not a sophisticated tale of shades of gray, and I get that normal people have their biases, but at least centuries old sorcerers should be wise enough to understand that not all people of country X are evil, or all people of country Y are stupid but brave.

Re: what are you reading?
That guy's a pretty darn good author though, most of the series he writes are pretty great.
I'm reading "Unequal Protection," a book about corporations and their history of slowly twisting the laws to their advantage and fucking others over.

Re: what are you reading?
I've been reading The Magician King for a week or so. It's a sequel to The Magicians. Anyone heard of it? I also picked up 1Q84 when it came out, but I haven't so much as read a few pages =\

Told my girlfriend to read it (who is a mega reader and Harry Potter fan) to read it, and we love it. I have The Magician King on my Kindle, but we're waiting til Winter break to start reading it. Sadly, I'm not as much of a "for fun" reader as I'd like to be. I read the Kindle sample of The Magicians on a whim, bought it, and got totally absorbed. I love the concepts, I love the writing, I love the adventure and creativity. I've never been as thrilled with a reading experience in some time (though again, that's not saying much for me). I'm totally thrilled because reviews have said that The Magician King is better than the first book. Sweet! For people who haven't heard of it, The Magicians is a book by Lev Grossman and can be very crudely described as Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia for adults. Talented kid gets into magician school. But it's so much more than that. The point isn't the magic, it's the character interactions, the themes, and the sense of shared ennui that really resonated with me. APLACA LETS TALK ABOUT THE FRICKIN MAGICIANS IN A PRIVATE MESSAGE. I encourage everyone to read the first TWO CHAPTERS here: http://us.penguingroup.com/static/pages ... ians1.html

Re: what are you reading?
Lol. I'll have to check it out sometime.
Hooray for procrastination.

Re: what are you reading?
I enjoyed The Magicians as well. Assuming I'll be able to reserve it at the library, The Magician King is next in my queue, after I finish the rest of the Belgariad.

Re: what are you reading?
@GR, I've never heard someone speak so enthusiastically about The Magicians haha. I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I read it about a year and a half ago, so I don't really remember much about it. One thing I do remember loving is the almost Lovecraftian sense of the book. There are many mysterious aspects and unknowns in the magical world, and they're all terrifying.

Re: what are you reading?
I just finished rereading Ender's Game. Fantastic book. I'll probably check out ^that next or some Murakami. Any suggestions on where to start off?

Re: what are you reading?
It's hard to recommend a Murakami book since everyone here has already read most of them. You don't know who has read what. I'd definitely check out The Magicians though.

Re: what are you reading?
Did someone say Murakami? Yay I finally found the thread.
Also.
Ender's Game was the only Sci-Fi-ish I've ever loved.
