Also Mare how does that not fall into the very definition of overrated? It is the [i]over-rating[/i] of something, no matter how minuscule the over-rating might be. In the case of Swanky Street, for me, it's clear that we all consider that song to be the second coming when it's just a great song, myself included. There's nothing wrong with considering yourself a part of the overratedness of something, that's just called being self-aware. And I find it hard to believe you haven't been in a situation where you saw a movie or heard a song and was like "yeah, I really liked that," while you had friends around you who were jizzing their skeletons out of their cocks over it. You didn't feel like maybe they were giving it undue praise? That's no less worthy a way of saying something is "overrated" than disliking it and noting its unworthy fellation, just a different degree of it.

I think that a lot of these may not be trollposts, is the problem. Hence the facepalming and ridiculing of opinions.

Yes, but it's silly to post about songs you think to be slightly overrated (you like them a lot but not quite x much) as opposed to the songs you find to be simply unpleasant/really just don't like much that others like a shitton.

Why?

I think that when you talk about things that are overrated, you'd want to talk about the things you find to be the most overrated as opposed to ones that you love and see all the positive aspects of, but aren't a personal absolute top. I think that's pretty much the same thing I've said a few times, but I don't know how to state it any other way.

Personally, I think it's silly to talk about overrated pillows songs [i]within the diehard pillows fan community[/i], just because we all love most of the stuff that the pillows have put out (hence why we are diehard fans). Plus, with the exception of the Great Living Field Schism, our opinions are all pretty much aligned. A "most underrated" thread makes much more sense, but that's obviously been done to death already.

In terms of "generally overrated songs", Advice is easily at the top of the list. Even if it wasn't featured in FLCL, I still wouldn't have liked it as a song. Come Down and ROSS are close behind, just because they're also fairly "meh" songs IMO.

That being said, I must say that I definitely think the IM community highly overrates the so-called "Holy Trinity". Sure, I like these albums a lot, but I don't think they deserve to be devoutly worshipped like they are on IM. I mean, just calling it the [i]Holy Trinity[/i], combined with the tendency of people here to always be like, "But they'll never make music like [i]The Holy Trinity[/i] again…" whenever the pillows release new stuff… I dunno, that's just giving these albums way too much credit, especially because it ignores other albums that are universally acknowledged to be among the pillows' best work (namely PML, for instance).

So yeah. A few of my all-time favorite songs are from "The Holy Trinity", but I still think it does not deserve all the fellating that it gets around here, and that makes it overrated in my mind.
