I've considered hopping onto this bandwagon, but I'm not sure how I feel about reading high fantasy these days. I liked The Hobbit well enough, but LOTR was a freaking bore to me.

@Orochi: Well, I started reading it the Thursday prior to the weekend, to be honest.
@Lesser_Hamster: So far so good. The series is far heavier on politics and intrigue than on fantasy, although the fantasy is creeping in more. I wasn't pleased with how little was resolved in this last book, but Martin still does a good job fleshing out his world and characters, and there were some outstanding parts. I was also pleased to find after the fact I actually missed a lot of interesting details (I guess I read too fast) that add to the story. As long as it doesn't drag on and on like the Wheel of Time (it shouldn't, just 2 more books planned) and he doesn't pull a Dark Tower-esque trick, I think I'll be happy.
Part of the reason LotR was so damn boring for me was because Tolkien wrote long sections featuring a particular set of characters/storyline. Martin mixes it up more by having different chapters for a character's POV, and there are far more storylines to keep track of. But he has a habit of leaving you hanging, which left me tempted to skip ahead to the next chapter on a character, but as some of the storylines intertwine, this isn't always a good idea.

It's quite the page turner. I really like the characters, as in I can relate to every one of them, no joke, but from what I've read, the way some readers regard Holden is hella skewed.

I agree, it' a very easy read and Salinger's probably one of the best first-person narrators I've read. But I think (and I'm sure Salinger would agree) that people try to get more out of the book than what's there. It's hard to explain. It didn't captivate me, nor did it repulse me.

I'm also reading The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil.
