Post Re: the pillows - The Thesis
Sawao writes the songs, Shin does the drum arrangement, Jun records bass, Manabe does lead guitar and bloops and bleeps I'd assume, from the ways they've described the process in interviews, but I'll ask them to expand on that stuff for sure. Also, it says songs by Sawao Yamanaka and arranged by the pillows, which basically means what I put above.
I think it's a bit unreasonable to expect him to remember what pickups were in their guitars 20 years ago. The ES-335 that Sawao used on Tiny Boat and some live stuff was a Gibson, you can see it clearly in the behind the scenes footage on the Walkin' On The Spiral DVD. You can see the one manabe is playing in the Daydream Wonder PV pretty clearly and it's either a Gibson or an ESP.

Manabe uses that Goldtop with the mini-humbuckers in the live version of Girlfriend and i'm pretty sure that was a Gibson too. Have to watch it again to be sure.
It is not unreasonable for them to remember something as specific as what pickup they had installed in their guitars, I'm pretty sure they still own those guitars also. Musicians usually remember their gear until they start losing their memory.
The ES Sawoa has in the Tiny Boat PV is clearly an ESP.

The ES Sawoa used for lives I think is a Greco copy, in Pantomime, and 90s MY LIFE booklet they give thanks to Greco. Probably Sawao endorsed them. From what I can make out from the font on this one is that it does not have that long curved "n" at the end like Gibson's font has, looks like it ends with an "o" Greco.

The Deluxe is a Gibson, got a good snap of the head stock and was able to make out the "n" as the last letter making Gibson.

The Goldtop in the Girlfriend PV is a different guitar though. It seems to have full sized humbuckers, no pickguard, the truss rod cover has no writing, and the font is of a different brand, it seems to be straight not slanted like Gibson, maybe Edwards?

The ES Manabe uses and the purple burst in the Tiny Boat PV look to be the same brand, I've never seem that font before though. I'm really interested to find out what brand these two guitars are, and the Girlfriend PV Goldtop.

Mare what is your major that you can write your thesis about a band? And if you do ask them about their gear maybe you could ask what that unmarked three knob black pedal that has been on his board recently. Hope your thesis goes well, if you can post it when your done I'd love to read it. :D

The ES Manabe has in Daydream Wonder might be a Tokai or a Hohner. But there were so many 335 copies it's not funny.

I'm guessing the Gibson copies are obscure Japan-only brands.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that Mare's thesis is about the pillows and has a particular theme, or argument that he's going for. I would doubt this is really a project to collect every single bit of data possible about the band.

I'm just curious about the direction of the thesis. 70-80 pages is a lot to fill, but I'm assuming it can't be a "here's every single factoid I managed to learn about the pillows" thing.

Do you have argument? A general thrust?

It's the story of the band told chronologically along with a look at the fan communities that have formed. A point of interest: specific choices Sawao et al have made in regards to intent behind the writing correlate pretty directly with what the Western fans generally agree upon as turning points in quality.

ROFL. That's not at all what I meant. Please disregard any mental images of Kashima mounting Jun that my comment might've conjured.

The damage is done.

But surely, Kashima greater than Jun, cannot be done since they both play completely different styles.

Sounds like a good read.

Does this come in a less-esoteric variety?
