Now, I couldn't get through Ikiru. I can appreciate it as a good film, but it was way too depressing for me.

The ending is pretty uplifting. It's a bit long, but man, it's good. It gets me right here~ *pounds his chest twice.*

Kurosawa's a beast. Rashomon or Yojimbo are definitely my favorites.

You could practically say any Kurosawa film and it'd be beast. I couldn't sit through Redbeard though. =\

I got Blade Runner as my inaugural Blu-Ray disc, and though I'd seen the film before it was much more enjoyable this way. It's an interesting and philosophical movie, but I love how it looks more than anything else. Incredible art direction and great special effects - I love the total absence of CGI in favor of models used for the city, flying cars, and matte paintings. In today's CGI-clustered cinematic world, I'd love to see deliberately retro filmmakers go back to using these types of special effects.

That reminded me of the first "older movie" I saw in blu-ray was First Blood. The quality made both my friend and I  . It looked like it came out in the 90s almost, instead of '82. At first I didn't really give a shit about blu-ray (since the quality increase was somewhat negligible, having seen Casino Royale and The Dark Knight in blu-ray,) but after watching First Blood, I'm a believer.

i've always agreed with this. even if you can tell that something is clearly a model, you can tell its actually, physically there. not that strange inexplainable shiny quality all CGI has. the space battle from return of the jedi is the absolutely the epitome of special effects as far as i'm concerned. now if only a film maker would use all the same techniques they used to make that, and use computer effects solely for compositing/touchups..

I saw Cowboys & Aliens last week. It was pretty good. I liked it, anyway. Going to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes later tonight.

First half of Birth of a Nation. I know I'm missing some of the "omg revolutionary film techniques" since I know jack shit about film from this period, but god damn, it's some boring shit. Second half is purportedly loaded with racism and glorification of the KKK, so that should be more exciting at least.

Most recent movie I watched was Gattaca, which was a pretty decent New Zealand Sci-fi film with a cool retro feel (both in terms of having an actually decent story rather than a special effects machine and in terms of the idea of what technology would look like).

I've had that on my pc and have been meaning to watch it for months.

I love Gattaca. I wouldn't call it a New Zealand film though, only the director was from New Zealand and it was shot in the US.

Oh, haha, well then, that. My friend from New Zealand called it a New Zealand movie, and I just assumed when I saw the director was a New Zealander that it must have been such. In any case, great film with some cool themes.

I'm sure Chinese people say the same thing about Brokeback Mountain

I liked Gattaca, but it's been a long time. maybe I'll watch it again.
