Re: what are you reading?
Read Sputnik Sweetheart over 2 days. I enjoyed it. I will say I'm getting tired of the whole "And then this important female character DISAPPEARS!" motif that Murakami seems to be so fond of, but meh. It was still quite good.
Next up is either The God Delusion or Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Haven't decided yet.

Re: what are you reading?
welp, The Metamorphosis is a novella and The God Delusion is a book. Kafka won't take you any time at all.

Re: what are you reading?
My dad's probably going to teach Murakami's After Dark in his world literature class next semester, at my suggestion, so I'm re-reading that so we can discuss it.

Did you introduce your dad to Murakami? That's pretty awesome that he's teaching it.
Currently reading: In Defense of Food.

Currently reading: In Defense of Food.
He gave me my first Murakami novel as a gift, but he hadn't read it until I told him it was a great read. He'd been using The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Yukio Mishima as his Japanese novel for classes, but I think After Dark gives a much better sense of modern Japanese issues. Unlike Mishima, I think most of Japan has gotten over feeling emasculated about WW2. re: Harry Chapin (not cat stevens) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJQ561LzGX4

I love food. But one should be circumspect about anything written by a "journalist" or "activist" on any matters not specific to journalism itself, as they seldom if ever know what they are talking about, especially concerning particularly academic or technical subjects (like, say, diet). To be honest, anyone who might be identified as a "journalist" comes with a presumption of incompetence, to me. Of course, this is not to say he is wrong - but these are important red flags...and I hear that this book in particular is unapologetically anti-scientific (not just non-scientific), which would be enough for me to relegate it to that section of the archives where one might find homeopathy, anti-vaccinationism, and creationism.
