the life aquatic dvd is about to be released on may 10. is anyone else excited about that? have you seen the film? how about the other wes anderson films?

i think we need to discuss this topic.

I've been a fan since bottle rocket. His films are very beautiful and remind me a lot of good French new wave.

Life Aquatic was technically perfect, and once again a beautiful work of cinema, but I wish Wes Anderson would narrow his scope with the next film.

I will still buy the Criterion Collection release when it comes out.

i wanted to see it, but never saw it, maybe i'll pick up the DVD

i have to say i was disappointed by the movie comedically... however, i enjoyed it on the whole...

especially the portugeese guy doing bowie throughout! =D

Hmm. I’m not terribly familiar with his work, but I very much enjoy the French new wave. What would you say is a good film of his to start with?

all his movies are consistantly amazing. life aquatic, the royal tennenbaums, anything really..

I think you would like his films. Then again I’ve told a couple people that, and they were unimpressed. I’d start with Rushmore. It’s his sophomore film. Very funny, but with a lot of content. Bill Murray also does one of the finest acting jobs I’ve ever seen. That really subtle, nuanced style of delivery that he used in all his earlier films translates amazingly well to more dramatic roles.

Bottle Rocket is my personal favorite though.

Yeah, Wes Anderson is argueably the best director working today. He goes to insane details about everything, and his films are like instant classics, because they're so good but also because the photography and visuals in his films look like older films.

Actually, moreso with Life Aquatic: it's got this very distinctive super 8/16 film and color quality that works perfectly with his whole retro-based present timeframe that the movie takes place in. I really love any type of media from the 1950's-60's, when practically every printed piece of text was done in that century gothic/futura type font face (I'm a graphics/typography fag sometimes, and I really like the way it looks)

Anyway, he's awesome. No comparison. Even though I was slightly dissappointed with Life Aquatic at first, I saw it again and realized that it is well-done. It's just not as humorous as his previous work.

You are fucking awesome.
I actually liked TLA better the first time I saw it. With every film Anderson tightens up his technique. I thought that life aquatic was one of the most visually superb films I've ever seen. By the second viewing my awe had decreased, and I felt a little less impressed. I'm now starting to warm up to it, and can’t wait to be able to watch at my leisure.

On the subject of typography faggotry, I like Wes Anderson's 60's era "French style" credits. Thanks superfolous commentary.

I probably would have liked the film more if it had A) dropped its comedic aspects, or B) made those comedic aspects more effective. The point is, I didn't find Life Aquatic to be especially funny, and that pretty much ruined it for me. And even though it [i]was[/i] pleasing to the eye, I for one wouldn't consider it visually superlative.

As for Wes Anderson's other films, I rather enjoyed Rushmore, but I have yet to see The Royal Tenenbaums or Bottle Rocket.

Watch it again. Anderson's pans are really elegant, and his sense of framing and composition are pretty impressive.

and watch royal tennebaums, its not as much a comedy, but still an absolutely delicious movie.

The one thing that is blatantly an Anderson trademark are those camera pans and movements, dead give-a-way.

Also, who else would murder someone to get the Adidas Zissou model shoes? I love the simple 3 stripe design and these are just awesome.

Those shoes were for sale somewhere.
