Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
I dropped Eureka Seven. First few episodes really grabbed my attention and I was inspired for another great anime. But as the show progressed, it didn't match my expectations. There was nothing interesting about it at all. The characters became from cool to annoying in just a few episodes. I didn't like where the story was going, and every single development made me cringe a bit. The humor was good though, shame about the rest.
I dismissed the show from the beginning episodes and missed the first dozen or two. On a whim I started watching again, about before the halfway point (right about when Renton left the main crew for a few episodes). I liked the second half, and business definitely picked up. There was an amusing soccer episode lol. I think the series, from what I saw, was a little hit and miss and there was a higher quotient of bloody violence than I was expecting in the second half. As a whole it did seem to teeter between unique and cliche, but the main relationship between Renton and Eureka develops quite nicely... So if everybody else's plots came up short, I feel at least the main twosome panned out well.

Re: Anime (other than FLCL)
Watched a couple of episodes of Gunslinger Girl. Interesting premise and very well executed from what I can tell, but…still a little weirded out by seeing 5-year-old girls emotionlessly mow down people with assault rifles.
If you want to be a lot weirded out, you can always check out this show called Strike Witches. It's about , I believe, 13 year old girls who are witches that, during WW2 when the world is invaded by aliens, have to put on these jet legs to attack spaceships. I don't think any of them wear pants and the amount of toe in any given episode would make any camel blush. I heard good things about it before really knowing much about it, watched the first episode and, despite all the wackiness and ridiculous hypersexual content, it's just plain boring. I did watch an entire episode once, though, when I took my friend and some of our friends to watch an episode they were airing at an anime convention. Said friend hasn't watched anime since he was like 13, but still goes to the convention to see the cosplayers and hang out with me and some of our mutual online friends. He was facepalming the entire time we were in the theater room. Best part? It had an English dub. Who bothered dubbing this shit?

I just watched 5 Centimeters Per Second, and I thought it was amazing. So beautiful, so melancholy. I'm definitely going to have to watch it again soon.

That's .18 kilometers per hour or .11 miles per hour, for reference.

It was okay the first time watching it, but a snooze fest the second time through. edit: best part of the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqFftJDXii0

That's one of my favorites. You rarely see anime that deliver so much emotionally in such a quiet context. And the animation is breathtaking.
